وَيۡلٞ لِّلۡمُطَفِّفِينَ ١
Woe to those who give less [than due],1
ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا ٱكۡتَالُواْ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ يَسۡتَوۡفُونَ ٢
Who, when they take a measure from people, take in full.
وَإِذَا كَالُوهُمۡ أَو وَّزَنُوهُمۡ يُخۡسِرُونَ ٣
But if they give by measure or by weight to them, they cause loss.
Literally ‘when they give by measure to others, or weigh out to them’.

أَلَا يَظُنُّ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ أَنَّهُم مَّبۡعُوثُونَ ٤
Do they not think that they will be resurrected
Every human being wants to have his dues paid in full. But it is only right and proper that, if he is a man of character, he should also take care to give to others their full and rightful dues. He should want for others whatever he wants for himself. Those who take full measure for themselves and give less to others, will reach the Hereafter in such an ill state of grace that they will be doomed to eternal perdition. One who tries to ensure full measure for himself knows that everyone should receive his just deserts. In this context, if he gives less while giving to others, he lessens his realization of or sensitivity to the rights of others. If a man repeats this sort of misdeed again and again, a time will finally come when he will completely lose his sensitivity to others’ rights. His heart will be completely corroded by his sinful actions. In the present world many people are not at all keen to respect the rights of others or to give them their full dues. They are interested solely in recovering in full what is due to them from others. Such people will remain in a state of deprivation in the Hereafter. Wise are those who are eager to discharge others’ rights and dues fully, because they are the ones who will be entitled to the great bounties of God in the Hereafter.

لِيَوۡمٍ عَظِيمٖ ٥
For a tremendous Day -
يَوۡمَ يَقُومُ ٱلنَّاسُ لِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ ٦
The Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds?
كـَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَٰبَ ٱلۡفُجَّارِ لَفِي سِجِّينٖ ٧
No! Indeed, the record of the wicked is in sijjeen.
وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا سِجِّينٞ ٨
And what can make you know what is sijjeen?
كِتَٰبٞ مَّرۡقُومٞ ٩
It is [their destination1 recorded in] a register inscribed.
وَيۡلٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ ١٠
Woe, that Day, to the deniers,
ٱلَّذِينَ يُكَذِّبُونَ بِيَوۡمِ ٱلدِّينِ ١١
Who deny the Day of Recompense.
وَمَا يُكَذِّبُ بِهِۦٓ إِلَّا كُلُّ مُعۡتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ ١٢
And none deny it except every sinful transgressor.
إِذَا تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَيۡهِ ءَايَٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ ١٣
When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples."
كـَلَّاۖ بَلۡۜ رَانَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُواْ يَكۡسِبُونَ ١٤
No! Rather, the stain has covered their hearts of that which they were earning.1
كـَلَّآ إِنَّهُمۡ عَن رَّبِّهِمۡ يَوۡمَئِذٖ لَّمَحۡجُوبُونَ ١٥
No! Indeed, from their Lord, that Day, they will be partitioned.1
ثُمَّ إِنَّهُمۡ لَصَالُواْ ٱلۡجَحِيمِ ١٦
Then indeed, they will [enter and] burn in Hellfire.
ثُمَّ يُقَالُ هَٰذَا ٱلَّذِي كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ ١٧
Then it will be said [to them], "This is what you used to deny."
Literally ‘A prison’. It means a certain place in which the record of the deeds of the wicked is preserved.

كـَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَٰبَ ٱلۡأَبۡرَارِ لَفِي عِلِّيِّينَ ١٨
No! Indeed, the record of the righteous is in ʿilliyyūn.
وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا عِلِّيُّونَ ١٩
And what can make you know what is ʿilliyyūn?
Duly registered and inscribed, with no possibility of error or effacement.

كِتَٰبٞ مَّرۡقُومٞ ٢٠
It is [their destination1 recorded in] a register inscribed
يَشۡهَدُهُ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبُونَ ٢١
Which is witnessed by those brought near [to Allāh].
إِنَّ ٱلۡأَبۡرَارَ لَفِي نَعِيمٍ ٢٢
Indeed, the righteous will be in pleasure
عَلَى ٱلۡأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ ٢٣
On adorned couches, observing.
تَعۡرِفُ فِي وُجُوهِهِمۡ نَضۡرَةَ ٱلنَّعِيمِ ٢٤
You will recognize in their faces the radiance of pleasure.
يُسۡقَوۡنَ مِن رَّحِيقٖ مَّخۡتُومٍ ٢٥
They will be given to drink [pure] wine1 [which was] sealed.
خِتَٰمُهُۥ مِسۡكٞۚ وَفِي ذَٰلِكَ فَلۡيَتَنَافَسِ ٱلۡمُتَنَٰفِسُونَ ٢٦
The last of it1 is musk. So for this let the competitors compete.
وَمِزَاجُهُۥ مِن تَسۡنِيمٍ ٢٧
And its mixture is of Tasneem,1
عَيۡنٗا يَشۡرَبُ بِهَا ٱلۡمُقَرَّبُونَ ٢٨
A spring from which those near [to Allāh] drink.
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ أَجۡرَمُواْ كَانُواْ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ يَضۡحَكُونَ ٢٩
Indeed, those who committed crimes used to laugh at those who believed.
وَإِذَا مَرُّواْ بِهِمۡ يَتَغَامَزُونَ ٣٠
And when they passed by them, they would exchange derisive glances.
وَإِذَا ٱنقَلَبُوٓاْ إِلَىٰٓ أَهۡلِهِمُ ٱنقَلَبُواْ فَكِهِينَ ٣١
And when they returned to their people, they would return jesting.
وَإِذَا رَأَوۡهُمۡ قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ لَضَآلُّونَ ٣٢
And when they saw them, they would say, "Indeed, those are truly lost."
وَمَآ أُرۡسِلُواْ عَلَيۡهِمۡ حَٰفِظِينَ ٣٣
But they had not been sent as guardians over them.
فَٱلۡيَوۡمَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ مِنَ ٱلۡكُفَّارِ يَضۡحَكُونَ ٣٤
So Today1 those who believed are laughing at the disbelievers,
عَلَى ٱلۡأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ ٣٥
On adorned couches, observing.
هَلۡ ثُوِّبَ ٱلۡكُفَّارُ مَا كَانُواْ يَفۡعَلُونَ ٣٦
Have the disbelievers [not] been rewarded [this Day] for what they used to do?
One who disregards his worldly considerations for the sake of the Hereafter is regarded as a fool and becomes diminished in the eyes of the worldly wise. But when the Hereafter comes, it will appear that the really wise ones were those who were considered foolish in the present world.
