ذَٰلِكَ مِنۡ أَنۢبَآءِ ٱلۡقُرَىٰ نَقُصُّهُۥ عَلَيۡكَۖ مِنۡهَا قَآئِمٞ وَحَصِيدٞ ١٠٠
That is from the news of the cities, which We relate to you; of them, some are [still] standing and some are [as] a harvest [mowed down].1

Commentary on 11:100–101
قوله تعالى: ذلِكَ مِنْ أَنْباءِ الْقُرى يعني: هذا الذي وصفت لك وقصصت عليك من أخبار الأمم، والقرون الماضية، نَقُصُّهُ عَلَيْكَ يعني: ينزل جبريل، ليقرأ عليك ليكون فيها دليل نبوتك، مِنْها قائِمٌ وَحَصِيدٌ يعني: من تلك القرى قائم، ومنها ما هو حصيد. والقائم، يعني: الظاهر ينظر إليه الناظر، والحصيد: يعني، خرب وهلك أصحابه. ويقال: القائم على بنيانه، والحصيد ما خرب. وقال قتادة: مِنْها قائِمٌ يعني: خاوية على عروشها وَحَصِيدٌ، يعني: مستأصلة. وقال الضحاك: مِنْها قائِمٌ يعني: مدينة عاد هلكوا، وبقيت مساكنهم، وَحَصِيدٌ يعني: مدائن قوم لوط، حصدت: أي قلعت من الأرض السفلى.
ثم قال تعالى: وَما ظَلَمْناهُمْ يعني: لم نعذبهم بغير ذنب، وَلكِنْ ظَلَمُوا أَنْفُسَهُمْ يعني: أضروا بأنفسهم حيث أكلوا رزق الله، وعبدوا غيره، وكذبوا رسله، فَما أَغْنَتْ عَنْهُمْ آلِهَتُهُمُ يعني: ما نفعتهم عبادة آلهتهم، الَّتِي يَدْعُونَ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ مِنْ شَيْءٍ إنما سماهم آلهة على وجه المجاز، يعني: آلهتهم بزعمهم، ولم يكونوا آلِهَة في الحقيقة. ومعناه: أصنامهم لا تقدر أن تمنعهم من عذاب الله من شيء، لَمَّا جاءَ أَمْرُ رَبِّكَ يعني: حين جاء عذاب ربك، وقال القتبي: إذا رأيت لِلَمَّا جواباً فهو بمعنى حين، كقوله تعالى: فَلَمَّا آسَفُونا انْتَقَمْنا مِنْهُمْ [الزخرف: 55] يعني: حين أغضبونا، وكقوله: لَمَّا جاءَ أَمْرُ رَبِّكَ يعني: حين جاء أمر ربك، يعني: عذاب ربك، وَما زادُوهُمْ غَيْرَ تَتْبِيبٍ يعني: غير تخسير، كقوله: تَبَّتْ يَدا أَبِي لَهَبٍ [المسد: 1] أي خسرت.

11:98
يَقۡدُمُ قَوۡمَهُۥ يَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِ فَأَوۡرَدَهُمُ ٱلنَّارَۖ وَبِئۡسَ ٱلۡوِرۡدُ ٱلۡمَوۡرُودُ ٩٨
He will precede his people on the Day of Resurrection and lead them into the Fire; and wretched is the place to which they are led.
11:99
وَأُتۡبِعُواْ فِي هَٰذِهِۦ لَعۡنَةٗ وَيَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِۚ بِئۡسَ ٱلرِّفۡدُ ٱلۡمَرۡفُودُ ٩٩
And they were followed in this [world] with a curse and on the Day of Resurrection. And wretched is the gift1 which is given.

11:100
ذَٰلِكَ مِنۡ أَنۢبَآءِ ٱلۡقُرَىٰ نَقُصُّهُۥ عَلَيۡكَۖ مِنۡهَا قَآئِمٞ وَحَصِيدٞ ١٠٠

11:101
وَمَا ظَلَمۡنَٰهُمۡ وَلَٰكِن ظَلَمُوٓاْ أَنفُسَهُمۡۖ فَمَآ أَغۡنَتۡ عَنۡهُمۡ ءَالِهَتُهُمُ ٱلَّتِي يَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مِن شَيۡءٖ لَّمَّا جَآءَ أَمۡرُ رَبِّكَۖ وَمَا زَادُوهُمۡ غَيۡرَ تَتۡبِيبٖ ١٠١
And We did not wrong them, but they wronged themselves. And they were not availed at all by their gods which they invoked other than Allāh when there came the command of your Lord. And they did not increase them in other than ruin.
11:102
وَكَذَٰلِكَ أَخۡذُ رَبِّكَ إِذَآ أَخَذَ ٱلۡقُرَىٰ وَهِيَ ظَٰلِمَةٌۚ إِنَّ أَخۡذَهُۥٓ أَلِيمٞ شَدِيدٌ ١٠٢
And thus is the seizure of your Lord when He seizes the cities while they are committing wrong. Indeed, His seizure is painful and severe.
11:103
إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَأٓيَةٗ لِّمَنۡ خَافَ عَذَابَ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِۚ ذَٰلِكَ يَوۡمٞ مَّجۡمُوعٞ لَّهُ ٱلنَّاسُ وَذَٰلِكَ يَوۡمٞ مَّشۡهُودٞ ١٠٣
Indeed in that is a sign for those who fear the punishment of the Hereafter. That is a Day for which the people will be collected, and that is a Day [which will be] witnessed.
11:104
وَمَا نُؤَخِّرُهُۥٓ إِلَّا لِأَجَلٖ مَّعۡدُودٖ ١٠٤
And We do not delay it except for a limited term.
11:105
يَوۡمَ يَأۡتِ لَا تَكَلَّمُ نَفۡسٌ إِلَّا بِإِذۡنِهِۦۚ فَمِنۡهُمۡ شَقِيّٞ وَسَعِيدٞ ١٠٥
The Day it comes no soul will speak except by His permission. And among them will be the wretched and the prosperous.
11:106
فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ شَقُواْ فَفِي ٱلنَّارِ لَهُمۡ فِيهَا زَفِيرٞ وَشَهِيقٌ ١٠٦
As for those who were [destined to be] wretched, they will be in the Fire. For them therein is [violent] exhaling and inhaling.1

11:107
خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا مَا دَامَتِ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتُ وَٱلۡأَرۡضُ إِلَّا مَا شَآءَ رَبُّكَۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ فَعَّالٞ لِّمَا يُرِيدُ ١٠٧
[They will be] abiding therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Lord should will. Indeed, your Lord is an effecter of what He intends.
11:108
۞ وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ سُعِدُواْ فَفِي ٱلۡجَنَّةِ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا مَا دَامَتِ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتُ وَٱلۡأَرۡضُ إِلَّا مَا شَآءَ رَبُّكَۖ عَطَآءً غَيۡرَ مَجۡذُوذٖ ١٠٨
And as for those who were [destined to be] prosperous, they will be in Paradise, abiding therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Lord should will - a bestowal uninterrupted.
