Commentary on 13:23

Then Allah explained which of the abodes of Paradise it is question, by saying: (Gardens of Eden) the compartment of the All-Merciful which is the source of the prophets, the veracious, the martyrs and the righteous (which they enter, along with all who do right) those who profess monotheism (of their fathers) will also enter it (and their helpmeets) those among them who profess monotheism will enter it (and their seed) as will do those of their offspring who profess monotheism-they will all enter the Gardens of Eden. (The angels enter unto them from every gate) He says: every one of them has a tent made of a hollowed pearl which has 4,000 doors, and each door has a leaf from which an angel enters.

13:19

Then is he who knows that what has been revealed to you from your Lord is the truth like one who is blind? They will only be reminded who are people of understanding -

13:20

Those who fulfill the covenant of Allāh and do not break the contract,

13:21

And those who join that which Allāh has ordered to be joined1 and fear their Lord and are afraid of the evil of [their] account,

1 translator’s note
  1. i.e., they uphold the ties of relationship. ↩

13:22

And those who are patient, seeking the face [i.e., acceptance] of their Lord, and establish prayer and spend from what We have provided for them secretly and publicly and prevent evil with good - those will have the good consequence of [this] home1 -

1 translator’s note
  1. i.e., the world and its trials, its good consequence being Paradise. ↩

13:23

Gardens of perpetual residence; they will enter them with whoever were righteous among their forefathers, their spouses and their descendants. And the angels will enter upon them from every gate, [saying],

13:24

"Peace [i.e., security] be upon you for what you patiently endured." And excellent is the final home.

13:25

But those who break the covenant of Allāh after contracting it and sever that which Allāh has ordered to be joined and spread corruption on earth - for them is the curse, and they will have the worst home.1

1 translator’s note
  1. i.e., Hell. Another meaning is (in contrast to verse 22), "...and they will have the bad consequence of [this] home," also referring to Hell. ↩

13:26

Allāh extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it]. And they rejoice in the worldly life, while the worldly life is not, compared to the Hereafter, except [brief] enjoyment.

13:27

And those who disbelieved say, "Why has a sign not been sent down to him from his Lord?" Say, [O Muḥammad], "Indeed, Allāh leaves astray whom He wills and guides to Himself whoever turns back [to Him] -

13:28

Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allāh. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allāh hearts are assured."
