Commentary on 15:73–77
The Destruction of the People of Lut
Allah said;
(So the Sayhah overtook them) This is the piercing sound that came to them when the sun rose, which was accompanied by the city being flipped upside down, and stones of baked clay (As-Sijjil) raining down upon them. The discussion of As-Sijjil in Surah Hud is a sufficient explanation. Allah said:
(Surely, in this are signs for those who see.) meaning that the traces of the destruction of that city are easily visible to any one who ponder about it, whether they look at it with physical eyesight or mental and spiritual insight, as Mujahid said concerning the phrase,
(those who see) he said, "those who have insight and discernment." It was reported from Ibn `Abbas and Ad-Dahhak that it referred to those who look. Qatadah said: "those who learn lessons".
(those who see) therefore the meaning is "those who ponder".
The City of Sodom on the Highroad
(And verily, they were right on the highroad.) meaning that the city of Sodom, which was physically and spiritually turned upside down, and pelted with stones until it became a foul smelling lake (the Dead Sea), is on a route that is easily accessible until the present day. This is like the Ayah,
(Verily, you pass by them in the morning, and at night. Will you not then reflect) (37:137-138).
(Surely, there is indeed a sign in that for the believers.) meaning, `All that We did to the people of Lut, from the destruction and the vengeance, to how We saved Lut and his family, these are clear signs to those who believe in Allah and His Messengers.'

15:71
[Lot] said, "These are my daughters1 - if you would be doers [of lawful marriage]."
1 translator’s note
- i.e., the women of his community who were lawful for marriage. ↩
15:72
By your life, [O Muḥammad], indeed they were, in their intoxication, wandering blindly.
15:73
So the shriek1 seized them at sunrise.
1 translator’s note
- See footnote to 11:67. ↩
15:74
And We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of hard clay.
15:75
Indeed in that are signs for those who discern.
15:76
And indeed, they [i.e., those cities] are [situated] on an established road.
15:77
Indeed in that is a sign for the believers.
15:78
And the companions of the thicket [i.e., the people of Madyan] were [also] wrongdoers,
15:79
So We took retribution from them, and indeed, both [cities] are on a clear highway.
15:80
And certainly did the companions of al-Ḥijr1 [i.e., the Thamūd] deny the messengers.
1 translator’s note
- The valley of stone. ↩
15:81
And We gave them Our signs, but from them they were turning away.
15:82
And they used to carve from the mountains, houses, feeling secure.
15:83
But the shriek seized them at early morning,
15:84
So nothing availed them [from] what they used to earn.
15:85
And We have not created the heavens and earth and that between them except in truth. And indeed, the Hour is coming; so forgive with gracious forgiveness.
15:86
Indeed, your Lord - He is the Knowing Creator.
15:87
And We have certainly given you, [O Muḥammad], seven of the often repeated [verses]1 and the great Qur’ān.
1 translator’s note
- Referring to Sūrah al-Fātiḥah. ↩
15:88
Do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [certain] categories of them [i.e., the disbelievers], and do not grieve over them. And lower your wing [i.e., show kindness] to the believers.
15:89
And say, "Indeed, I am the clear warner" -
15:90
Just as We had revealed [scriptures] to the separators1
1 translator’s note
- Those who separated from the teachings of their prophets. Another meaning is "As We sent down [punishment] on the sworn opponents [to Allāh's message]." ↩
