Commentary on 17:110–111

Those who have not found the truth at a deeper level always find themselves embroiled in petty, superficial things. Some hold that God should be called by one name, others by another name. Some hold that the words of devotions should be uttered loudly, others that they be uttered quietly. The Arabs were engaged in such debates and discussions in different ways. God said that all His names were good. He might be called by any of His names. Similarly, acts of devotion are not to be judged by quiet or loud utterances, but rather by the spirit they evince. The spirit of prayer is one of a deep consciousness of God’s greatness. Belief in God should become akin to discovering a perfect and great Being, who is independent of any help from anyone; who has no equal and no partner. When this discovery finds words and comes to the lips of the believer, it is called celebration of God’s greatness (takbir).

17:105

And with the truth We have sent it [i.e., the Qur’ān] down, and with the truth it has descended. And We have not sent you, [O Muḥammad], except as a bringer of good tidings and a warner.

17:106

And [it is] a Qur’ān which We have separated [by intervals] that you might recite it to the people over a prolonged period. And We have sent it down progressively.

17:107

Say, "Believe in it or do not believe." Indeed, those who were given knowledge before it1 - when it is recited to them, they fall upon their faces in prostration,

1 translator’s note
  1. i.e., the righteous among the People of the Scriptures who recognize the truth contained in the Qur’ān. ↩

17:108

And they say, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, the promise of our Lord has been fulfilled."

17:109

And they fall upon their faces weeping, and it [i.e., the Qur’ān] increases them in humble submission.

17:110

Say, "Call upon Allāh or call upon the Most Merciful [ar-Raḥmān]. Whichever [name] you call - to Him belong the best names." And do not recite [too] loudly in your prayer or [too] quietly but seek between that an [intermediate] way.

17:111

And say, "Praise to Allāh, who has not taken a son and has had no partner in [His] dominion and has no [need of a] protector out of weakness; and glorify Him with [great] glorification."
