And give full measure when you measure, and weigh with an even [i.e., honest] balance. That is the best [way] and best in result.

Commentary on 17:34–35
The Command to handle the Orphan's Wealth properly and to be Honest in Weights and Measures
(And come not near to the orphan's property except to improve it, until he attains the age of full strength.) meaning, do not dispose of the orphan's wealth except in a proper manner.
(but consume it the orphan's property not wastefully and hastily fearing that they should grow up, and whoever (among guardians) is rich, he should take no wages, but if he is poor, let him have for himself what is just and reasonable (according to his labor).) 4:6 In Sahih Muslim it is recorded that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Abu Dharr:
(O Abu Dharr, I see that you are weak (in adiministering), and I like for you that which I like for myself. Do not let yourself be appointed as Amir over two people, and do not let yourself be appointed as guardian of an orphan's property.)
(And fulfill (every) covenant.) meaning, everything that you promise people, and the covenants that you agree to, because the person who makes a covenant or a promise will be asked about it:
(Verily, the covenant will be questioned about.)
(And give full measure when you measure.) meaning, do not try to make it weigh less nor wrong people with their belongings.
(and weigh with a balance) meaning scales,
(that is straight.) meaning that which is not distorted nor that which will cause confusion.
(that is good) for you, in your daily life and in your Hereafter. So Allah says:
(and better in the end.) meaning, with regard to your ultimate end in the Hereafter.
(That is good (advantageous) and better in the end.) Sa`id narrated that Qatadah said that this means "Better in reward and a better end. " Ibn `Abbas used to say: "O people, you are entrusted with two things for which the people who came before you were destroyed - these weights and measures."

17:28
And if you [must] turn away from them [i.e., the needy] awaiting mercy from your Lord which you expect,1 then speak to them a gentle word.
1 translator’s note
- i.e., if you have not the means to give them at present. ↩
17:29
And do not make your hand [as] chained to your neck1 or extend it completely2 and [thereby] become blamed and insolvent.
17:30
Indeed, your Lord extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it]. Indeed He is ever, concerning His servants, Aware and Seeing.
17:31
And do not kill your children for fear of poverty. We provide for them and for you. Indeed, their killing is ever a great sin.
17:32
And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse.1 Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.
1 translator’s note
- i.e., avoid all situations that might possibly lead to it. ↩
17:33
And do not kill the soul [i.e., person] which Allāh has forbidden, except by right.1 And whoever is killed unjustly - We have given his heir authority,2 but let him not exceed limits in [the matter of] taking life. Indeed, he has been supported [by the law].
17:34
And do not approach the property of an orphan, except in the way that is best,1 until he reaches maturity. And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned.
1 translator’s note
- i.e., to improve or increase it. ↩
17:35
And give full measure when you measure, and weigh with an even [i.e., honest] balance. That is the best [way] and best in result.
17:36
And do not pursue1 that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.
1 translator’s note
- i.e., do not assume and do not say. ↩
17:37
And do not walk upon the earth exultantly. Indeed, you will never tear the earth [apart], and you will never reach the mountains in height.1
1 translator’s note
- Man, for all his arrogance, is yet a weak and small creature. ↩
17:38
All that [i.e., the aforementioned] - its evil is ever, in the sight of your Lord, detested.
