Commentary on 17:84

Commentary

Regarding the explanation of the word: شاکِلَۃ (shakilah) in verse 84: كُلٌّ يَعْمَلُ عَلَىٰ شَاكِلَتِهِ (Everyone acts in his own style), several interpretations have been reported from authorities among the early righteous elders,

such as, disposition, habit, instinct, intention, way or manner. In sum, all these turn into a second nature in terms of the circumstances, habits and customs everyone lives with. Thus, what one does remains subservient to it. (Qurtubi) In this verse, human beings have been warned that they must abstain from bad surroundings, bad company and bad habits and take to the company of good people and inculcate good habits (a1-Jassas). The reason, as stated earlier, is that one's response pattern built up under the influence of surrounding, company and custom makes one do what it dictates. Imam al-Jassas has also given another meaning of 'shakilah' at this place, that of 'like.' Given this meaning, the sense of the verse would be that everyone feels comfortable with a person who is compatible with one's temperament. A good man finds another good man familiar while a wicked man feels comfortable with another wicked man whose style he follows without any qualms of conscience. An example of this behavior pattern appears in what Allah says in the Qur’ an: الْخَبِيثَاتُ لِلْخَبِيثِينَ (Evil women are for evil men - 24:26) and وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ لِلطَّيِّبِينَ (Good women are for good men - 24:26). It means that everyone strikes familiarity with a man or woman according to one's own temperament. In short, this too is a warning against falling into bad company and bad habits. One should really make an effort to abstain from these.

17:76

And indeed, they were about to provoke [i.e., drive] you from the land [i.e., Makkah] to evict you therefrom. And then [when they do], they will not remain [there] after you, except for a little.1

1 translator’s note
  1. Only ten years after the Prophet's emigration, Makkah was completely cleared of his enemies. ↩

17:77

[That is Our] established way for those We had sent before you of Our messengers; and you will not find in Our way any alteration.

17:78

Establish prayer at the decline of the sun [from its meridian] until the darkness of the night1 and [also] the Qur’ān [i.e., recitation] of dawn.2 Indeed, the recitation of dawn is ever witnessed.

2 translator’s notes
  1. i.e., the period which includes the ẓuhr, aṣr, maghrib, and ʿishā’ prayers.

[768] i.e., the fajr prayer, in which the recitation of the Qur’ān is prolonged.

17:79

And from [part of] the night, pray1 with it [i.e., recitation of the Qur’ān] as additional [worship] for you; it is expected that2 your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station.3

3 translator’s notes
  1. Literally, "arise from sleep for prayer."

[770] This is a promise from Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) to Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ).

[771] The position of intercession by permission of Allāh and the highest degree in Paradise.

17:80

And say, "My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance1 and to exit a sound exit2 and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority."

2 translator’s notes
  1. Into Madīnah at the time of emigration, or into the grave.

[773] From Makkah, or from the grave at the time of resurrection.

17:81

And say, "Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, [by nature], ever bound to depart."

17:82

And We send down of the Qur’ān that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss.

17:83

And when We bestow favor upon man [i.e., the disbeliever], he turns away and distances himself; and when evil touches him, he is ever despairing.

17:84

Say, "Each works according to his manner, but your Lord is most knowing of who is best guided in way."

17:85

And they ask you, [O Muḥammad], about the soul. Say, "The soul is of the affair [i.e., concern] of my Lord. And you [i.e., mankind] have not been given of knowledge except a little."

17:86

And if We willed, We could surely do away with that which We revealed to you. Then you would not find for yourself concerning it an advocate against Us.
