So by your Lord, We will surely gather them and the devils; then We will bring them to be present around Hell upon their knees.1

Commentary on 19:66–68

The Arabs, who were the primary addressees of the Quran, accepted the theory of life after death. All the words in the Quran relating to the life hereafter were already present in their vocabulary. But their acceptance was purely formal, as such it had no impact on their lives. In practice, they led their lives in a way that implied, ‘The life of this world is the only life. Who is going to resurrect us after our death and who is going to call us to account?’ This indifference or denial, persists because man does not give serious consideration to this matter. If he did so, he would find that his initial, first birth is in itself an argument in support of his re-birth. Here, the word ‘Satan’ stands for leaders who, with the help of deceitful words, mislead the common man. In this sense, they do the same work as Satan does. In the present world, these leaders are highly visible in their positions of greatness, and the people are therefore unable to ignore them. But, in the life hereafter, they will lose this ‘greatness’ and will be pushed into the pit of ignominy along with their followers.

19:65

Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them - so worship Him and have patience for His worship. Do you know of any similarity to Him?"

19:66

And man [i.e., the disbeliever] says, "When I have died, am I going to be brought forth alive?"

19:67

Does man not remember that We created him before, while he was nothing?

19:68

So by your Lord, We will surely gather them and the devils; then We will bring them to be present around Hell upon their knees.1

19:69

Then We will surely extract from every sect those of them who were worst against the Most Merciful in insolence.

19:70

Then, surely it is We who are most knowing of those most worthy of burning therein.

19:71

And there is none of you except he will come to it.1 This is upon your Lord an inevitability decreed.

1 translator’s note
  1. i.e., be exposed to it. However, the people of Paradise will not be harmed thereby. ↩

19:72

Then We will save those who feared Allāh and leave the wrongdoers within it, on their knees.

19:73

And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, those who disbelieve say to those who believe, "Which of [our] two parties is best in position and best in association?"1

19:74

And how many a generation have We destroyed before them who were better in possessions and [outward] appearance?

19:75

Say, "Whoever is in error - let the Most Merciful extend for him an extension [in wealth and time] until, when they see that which they were promised - either punishment [in this world] or the Hour [of resurrection] - they will come to know who is worst in position and weaker in soldiers."

19:76

And Allāh increases those who were guided, in guidance, and the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord1 for reward and better for recourse.
