Commentary on 21:10–15
The Virtue of the Qur'an Here
Allah points out the noble status of the Qur'an and urges them to recognize its worth:
(Indeed, We have sent down for you a Book in which there is Dhikrukum). Ibn `Abbas said: "Honor for you."
(Will you not then understand) means, will you not understand this blessing, and accept it This is like the Ayah:
(And verily, this is indeed a Reminder for you and your people, and you will be questioned.) 43:44
How the Evildoers were destroyed
(How many a town given to wrongdoing, have We destroyed,) meaning, they were very many. This is like the Ayah:
(And how many generations have We destroyed after Nuh!) 17:17
(And many a township did We destroy while they were given to wrongdoing, so that it lie in ruins) 22:45.
(and raised up after them another people!) means, another nation which came after them.
(Then, when they sensed Our torment,) when they realized that the torment would undoubtedly come upon them, just as their Prophet had warned them,
(behold, they (tried to) flee from it.) they tried to run away.
(Flee not, but return to that wherein you lived a luxurious life, and to your homes,) This is a way of ridiculing them. It will be said to them by way of ridicule: "Do not run away from the coming torment; go back to the delights and luxuries and fine homes in which you were living." Qatadah said, "Mocking them."
(in order that you may be questioned) about whether you gave thanks for what you had.
(They cried: "Woe to us! Certainly we have been wrong- doers.") They will confess their sins when it will be of no benefit to them.
(And that cry of theirs ceased not, till We made them as a field that is reaped, extinct.) meaning, "they will keep on saying that, admitting their wrong- doing, until We harvest them as it were, and their movements and voices come to a stop."

21:11
And how many a city which was unjust1 have We shattered and produced after it another people.

- i.e., its inhabitants persisting in wrongdoing. ↩
21:12
And when they [i.e., its inhabitants] perceived Our punishment, at once they fled from it.
21:13
[Some angels said], "Do not flee but return to where you were given luxury and to your homes - perhaps you will be questioned."1

- About what happened to you. This is said to them in sarcasm and ridicule. ↩
21:14
They said, "O woe to us! Indeed, we were wrongdoers."
21:15
And that declaration of theirs did not cease until We made them [as] a harvest [mowed down], extinguished [like a fire].
21:16
And We did not create the heaven and earth and that between them in play.
21:17
Had We intended to take a diversion,1 We could have taken it from [what is] with Us - if [indeed] We were to do so.

- Such as a wife or a child. ↩
21:18
Rather, We dash the truth upon falsehood, and it destroys it,1 and thereupon it departs. And for you is destruction from that which you describe.2
21:19
To Him belongs whoever is in the heavens and the earth. And those near Him [i.e., the angels] are not prevented by arrogance from His worship, nor do they tire.
21:20
They exalt [Him] night and day [and] do not slacken.
21:21
Or have they [i.e., men] taken for themselves gods from the earth who resurrect [the dead]?
21:22
Had there been within them [i.e., the heavens and earth] gods besides Allāh, they both would have been ruined. So exalted is Allāh, Lord of the Throne, above what they describe.
21:23
He is not questioned about what He does, but they will be questioned.
21:24
Or have they taken gods besides Him? Say, [O Muḥammad], "Produce your proof. This [Qur’ān] is the message for those with me and the message of those before me."1 But most of them do not know the truth, so they are turning away.
1 translator’s note
