Commentary on 21:3–4

(Would you then go along with sorcery while you have eyes to see? - 21:3) Those people used to discuss among themselves secretly that the claim of the Holy Prophet about his prophethood should not be accepted, because he was an ordinary human being like all others and not an angel. On the other hand not even the most rigid among the unbelievers could deny the supreme charm and eloquence of the Book of Allah nor its power to influence people when it was recited before them. Therefore, in order to turn people away from the Holy Book they started calling it magic and black art. They thought that they could keep people away from Islam by labeling the Qur'an as a book of magic thereby dissuading people from going to the Holy Prophet ﷺ and listening to Qur'an. Probably they used to discuss this subject secretly among themselves lest the Muslims come to know about their foolish views and unveil their fallacy.

21:1

[The time of] their account has approached for the people, while they are in heedlessness turning away.

21:2

No mention [i.e., revelation] comes to them anew from their Lord except that they listen to it while they are at play

21:3

With their hearts distracted. And those who do wrong conceal their private conversation, [saying], "Is this [Prophet] except a human being like you? So would you approach magic while you are aware [of it]?"

21:4

He [the Prophet (ﷺ)] said, "My Lord knows whatever is said throughout the heaven and earth, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing."

21:5

But they say, "[The revelation is but] a mixture of false dreams; rather, he has invented it; rather, he is a poet. So let him bring us a sign just as the previous [messengers] were sent [with miracles]."

21:6

Not a [single] city which We destroyed believed before them,1 so will they believe?

1 translator’s note
  1. Even though they had witnessed signs and miracles. ↩

21:7

And We sent not before you, [O Muḥammad], except men to whom We revealed [the message], so ask the people of the message [i.e., former scriptures] if you do not know.

21:8

And We did not make them [i.e., the prophets] forms not eating food,1 nor were they immortal [on earth].

1 translator’s note
  1. Like the angels. Rather, they were human beings with human attributes. ↩

21:9

Then1 We fulfilled for them the promise, and We saved them and whom We willed and destroyed the transgressors.

1 translator’s note
  1. Once they had conveyed the message. ↩

21:10

We have certainly sent down to you a Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] in which is your mention.1 Then will you not reason?

1 translator’s note
  1. This implies the honor of having been mentioned or addressed. Another meaning is "your reminder." ↩
