Commentary on 21:58–62

فَجَعَلَهُمْ جُذَاذًا (21:58) The word جُذَاذً is the plural for جُذَ. which means fragment or piece. Thus its meaning is that Sayyidna Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) broke the idols into small pieces.

(Save the big one of them - 21:58) That is, only the biggest idol was left intact and all the rest were broken. It is possible that the one which was left unbroken was either bigger in size or higher in esteem with the unbelievers.

(So that they may come back to him - 21:58) There can be three explanations to this expression. One, if the object of إِلَيْهِ (to him) is Sayyidna Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) then the meaning would be that he himself wanted the unbelievers to ask him why he had broken the idols which would give him a chance to sneer at them that what they worshipped could not even look after themselves. The second meaning of إِلَيْهِ يَرْ‌جِعُونَ could be that he destroyed the idols in the hope that when the unbelievers saw them in pieces it might convince them of the futility of idol-worship and cause their return toward the religion of Sayyidna Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) . The third explanation is given by Kalbi. He says that the object of إِلَيْهِ is کَبِیر (the big). In that case the explanation would be that when the unbelievers, on their return saw the idols in pieces except the big one, who had a hammer resting on his shoulder, they might turn towards it for an explanation and getting no response from it they would see for themselves the helplessness of the idol.

21:58

So he made them into fragments, except a large one among them, that they might return to it [and question].

21:59

They said, "Who has done this to our gods? Indeed, he is of the wrongdoers."

21:60

They said, "We heard a young man mention them who is called Abraham."

21:61

They said, "Then bring him before the eyes of the people that they may testify."1

1 translator’s note
  1. To what they had heard him say. It may also mean "...that they may witness [what will be done to him as punishment]." ↩

21:62

They said, "Have you done this to our gods, O Abraham?"

21:63

He said, "Rather, this - the largest of them - did it, so ask them, if they should [be able to] speak."

21:64

So they returned to [blaming] themselves and said [to each other], "Indeed, you are the wrongdoers."

21:65

Then they reversed themselves,1 [saying], "You have already known that these do not speak!"

1 translator’s note
  1. After first admitting their error, they were seized by pride and obstinacy. ↩

21:66

He said, "Then do you worship instead of Allāh that which does not benefit you at all or harm you?

21:67

Uff1 to you and to what you worship instead of Allāh. Then will you not use reason?"

1 translator’s note
  1. An exclamation of anger and displeasure. ↩

21:68

They said, "Burn him and support your gods - if you are to act."

21:69

We [i.e., Allāh] said, "O fire, be coolness and safety upon Abraham."

21:70

And they intended for him a plan [i.e., harm], but We made them the greatest losers.

21:71

And We delivered him and Lot to the land which We had blessed for the worlds [i.e., peoples].

21:72

And We gave him Isaac and Jacob in addition, and all [of them] We made righteous.
