بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
Al-Anbya 21:8

وَمَا جَعَلۡنَٰهُمۡ جَسَدٗا لَّا يَأۡكُلُونَ ٱلطَّعَامَ وَمَا كَانُواْ خَٰلِدِينَ ٨
And We did not make them [i.e., the prophets] forms not eating food,1 nor were they immortal [on earth].

Commentary on 21:8
﴿وما جَعَلْناهم جَسَدًا لا يَأْكُلُونَ الطَّعامَ وما كانُوا خالِدِينَ﴾
الجَسَدُ: الجِسْمُ الَّذِي لا حَياةَ فِيهِ، وهو يُرادِفُ الجُثَّةَ. هَذا قَوْلُ المُحَقِّقِينَ مِن أئِمَّةِ اللُّغَةِ مِثْلِ أبِي إسْحاقَ الزَّجّاجِ في تَفْسِيرِ قَوْلِهِ تَعالى: ﴿فَأخْرَجَ لَهم عِجْلًا جَسَدًا﴾ [طه: ٨٨] . وقَدْ تَقَدَّمَ هُناكَ، ومِنهُ قَوْلُهُ تَعالى: ﴿ولَقَدْ فَتَنّا سُلَيْمانَ وألْقَيْنا عَلى كُرْسِيِّهِ جَسَدًا﴾ [ص: ٣٤] . قِيلَ هو شِقُّ غُلامٍ لا رُوحَ فِيهِ، ولَدَتْهُ إحْدى نِسائِهِ، أيْ ما جَعَلْناهم أجْرامًا غَيْرَ مُنْبَثَّةٍ فِيها الأرْواحُ بِحَيْثُ تَنْتَفِي عَنْهم صِفاتُ البَشَرِ الَّتِي خاصَّتُها أكْلُ الطَّعامِ، وهَذا رَدٌّ لِما يَقُولُونَهُ: ﴿ما لِهَذا الرَّسُولِ يَأْكُلُ الطَّعامَ﴾ [الفرقان: ٧] مَعَ قَوْلِهِمْ هُنا: ﴿هَلْ هَذا إلّا بَشَرٌ مِثْلُكُمْ﴾ [الأنبياء: ٣] .
وذِكْرُ الجَسَدِ يُفِيدُ التَّهَكُّمَ بِالمُشْرِكِينَ؛ لِأنَّهم لَمّا قالُوا: ﴿ما لِهَذا الرَّسُولِ يَأْكُلُ الطَّعامَ﴾ [الفرقان: ٧]، وسَألُوا أنْ يَأْتِيَ بِما أُرْسِلَ بِهِ الأوَّلُونَ - كانَ مُقْتَضى أقْوالِهِمْ أنَّ الرُّسُلَ الأوَّلِينَ كانُوا في صُوَرِ الآدَمِيِّينَ لَكِنَّهم لا يَأْكُلُونَ الطَّعامَ، وأكْلُ الطَّعامِ مِن لَوازِمِ الحَياةِ، فَلَزِمَهم لَمّا قالُوا: ما لِهَذا الرَّسُولِ يَأْكُلُ الطَّعامَ أنْ يَكُونُوا قائِلِينَ بِأنَّ شَأْنَ الرُّسُلِ أنْ يَكُونُوا أجْسادًا بِلا أرْواحٍ، وهَذا مِنَ السَّخافَةِ بِمَكانَةٍ. وأمّا قَوْلُهُ: ﴿وما كانُوا خالِدِينَ﴾ فَهو زِيادَةُ اسْتِدْلالٍ لِتَحْقِيقِ بَشَرِيَّتِهِمُ اسْتِدْلالًا بِما هو واقِعٌ مِن عَدَمِ كَفاءَةِ أُولَئِكَ الرُّسُلِ كَما هو مَعْلُومٌ بِالمُشاهَدَةِ، لِقَطْعِ مَعاذِيرِ الضّالِّينَ، فَإنْ زَعَمُوا أنْ قَدْ كانَ الرُّسُلُ

الأوَّلُونَ مُخالِفِينَ لِلْبَشَرِ فَماذا يَصْنَعُونَ في لَحاقِ الفَناءِ إيّاهم، فَهَذا وجْهُ زِيادَةِ ﴿وما كانُوا خالِدِينَ﴾ . وأُتِيَ في نَفْيِ الخُلُودِ عَنْهم بِصِيغَةِ ”ما كانُوا“ تَحْقِيقًا لِتَمَكُّنِ عَدَمِ الخُلُودِ مِنهم.

بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
21:1
ٱقۡتَرَبَ لِلنَّاسِ حِسَابُهُمۡ وَهُمۡ فِي غَفۡلَةٖ مُّعۡرِضُونَ ١
[The time of] their account has approached for the people, while they are in heedlessness turning away.
21:2
مَا يَأۡتِيهِم مِّن ذِكۡرٖ مِّن رَّبِّهِم مُّحۡدَثٍ إِلَّا ٱسۡتَمَعُوهُ وَهُمۡ يَلۡعَبُونَ ٢
No mention [i.e., revelation] comes to them anew from their Lord except that they listen to it while they are at play
21:3
لَاهِيَةٗ قُلُوبُهُمۡۗ وَأَسَرُّواْ ٱلنَّجۡوَى ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ هَلۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا بَشَرٞ مِّثۡلُكُمۡۖ أَفَتَأۡتُونَ ٱلسِّحۡرَ وَأَنتُمۡ تُبۡصِرُونَ ٣
With their hearts distracted. And those who do wrong conceal their private conversation, [saying], "Is this [Prophet] except a human being like you? So would you approach magic while you are aware [of it]?"
21:4
قَالَ رَبِّي يَعۡلَمُ ٱلۡقَوۡلَ فِي ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۖ وَهُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلۡعَلِيمُ ٤
He [the Prophet (ﷺ)] said, "My Lord knows whatever is said throughout the heaven and earth, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing."
21:5
بَلۡ قَالُوٓاْ أَضۡغَٰثُ أَحۡلَٰمِۭ بَلِ ٱفۡتَرَىٰهُ بَلۡ هُوَ شَاعِرٞ فَلۡيَأۡتِنَا بِـَٔايَةٖ كَمَآ أُرۡسِلَ ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ ٥
But they say, "[The revelation is but] a mixture of false dreams; rather, he has invented it; rather, he is a poet. So let him bring us a sign just as the previous [messengers] were sent [with miracles]."
21:6
مَآ ءَامَنَتۡ قَبۡلَهُم مِّن قَرۡيَةٍ أَهۡلَكۡنَٰهَآۖ أَفَهُمۡ يُؤۡمِنُونَ ٦
Not a [single] city which We destroyed believed before them,1 so will they believe?

21:7
وَمَآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا قَبۡلَكَ إِلَّا رِجَالٗا نُّوحِيٓ إِلَيۡهِمۡۖ فَسۡـَٔلُوٓاْ أَهۡلَ ٱلذِّكۡرِ إِن كُنتُمۡ لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ ٧
And We sent not before you, [O Muḥammad], except men to whom We revealed [the message], so ask the people of the message [i.e., former scriptures] if you do not know.
21:8
وَمَا جَعَلۡنَٰهُمۡ جَسَدٗا لَّا يَأۡكُلُونَ ٱلطَّعَامَ وَمَا كَانُواْ خَٰلِدِينَ ٨

21:9
ثُمَّ صَدَقۡنَٰهُمُ ٱلۡوَعۡدَ فَأَنجَيۡنَٰهُمۡ وَمَن نَّشَآءُ وَأَهۡلَكۡنَا ٱلۡمُسۡرِفِينَ ٩
Then1 We fulfilled for them the promise, and We saved them and whom We willed and destroyed the transgressors.

21:10
لَقَدۡ أَنزَلۡنَآ إِلَيۡكُمۡ كِتَٰبٗا فِيهِ ذِكۡرُكُمۡۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ١٠
We have certainly sent down to you a Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] in which is your mention.1 Then will you not reason?

- This implies the honor of having been mentioned or addressed. Another meaning is "your reminder." ↩
