فَيَقُولُواْ هَلۡ نَحۡنُ مُنظَرُونَ ٢٠٣
And they will say, "May we be reprieved?"

Commentary on 26:203
أي : يتمنون حين يشاهدون العذاب أن لو أنظروا قليلا ليعملوا [ من فزعهم ] بطاعة الله ، كما قال تعالى : ( وأنذر الناس يوم يأتيهم العذاب فيقول الذين ظلموا ربنا أخرنا إلى أجل قريب نجب دعوتك ونتبع الرسل أولم تكونوا أقسمتم من قبل ما لكم من زوال ) [ إبراهيم : 44 ] ، فكل ظالم وفاجر وكافر إذا شاهد عقوبته ، ندم ندما شديدا هذا فرعون لما دعا عليه الكليم بقوله : ( ربنا إنك آتيت فرعون وملأه زينة وأموالا في الحياة الدنيا ربنا ليضلوا عن سبيلك ربنا اطمس على أموالهم واشدد على قلوبهم فلا يؤمنوا حتى يروا العذاب الأليم قال قد أجيبت دعوتكما ) [ فاستقيما ولا تتبعان سبيل الذين لا يعلمون ] ) [ يونس : 88 ، 89 ] ، فأثرت هذه الدعوة في فرعون ، فما آمن حتى رأى العذاب الأليم ، ( حتى إذا أدركه الغرق قال آمنت أنه لا إله إلا الذي آمنت به بنو إسرائيل وأنا من المسلمين . آلآن وقد عصيت قبل وكنت من المفسدين ) [ يونس : 90 ، 91 ] ، وقال : ( فلما رأوا بأسنا قالوا آمنا بالله وحده وكفرنا بما كنا به مشركين فلم يك ينفعهم إيمانهم لما رأوا بأسنا ) [ غافر : 84 ، 85 ] الآية .

26:184
وَٱتَّقُواْ ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَكُمۡ وَٱلۡجِبِلَّةَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ ١٨٤
And fear He who created you and the former creation."1

26:185
قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُسَحَّرِينَ ١٨٥
They said, "You are only of those affected by magic.
26:186
وَمَآ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرٞ مِّثۡلُنَا وَإِن نَّظُنُّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلۡكَٰذِبِينَ ١٨٦
You are but a man like ourselves, and indeed, we think you are among the liars.
26:187
فَأَسۡقِطۡ عَلَيۡنَا كِسَفٗا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ ١٨٧
So cause to fall upon us fragments of the sky, if you should be of the truthful."
26:188
قَالَ رَبِّيٓ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ ١٨٨
He said, "My Lord is most knowing of what you do."
26:189
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَهُمۡ عَذَابُ يَوۡمِ ٱلظُّلَّةِۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَذَابَ يَوۡمٍ عَظِيمٍ ١٨٩
And they denied him, so the punishment of the day of the black cloud seized them. Indeed, it was the punishment of a terrible day.
26:190
إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَأٓيَةٗۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّؤۡمِنِينَ ١٩٠
Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.
26:191
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ ١٩١
And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.
26:192
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَتَنزِيلُ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ ١٩٢
And indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is the revelation of the Lord of the worlds.
26:193
نَزَلَ بِهِ ٱلرُّوحُ ٱلۡأَمِينُ ١٩٣
The Trustworthy Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] has brought it down
26:194
عَلَىٰ قَلۡبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُنذِرِينَ ١٩٤
Upon your heart, [O Muḥammad] - that you may be of the warners
26:195
بِلِسَانٍ عَرَبِيّٖ مُّبِينٖ ١٩٥
In a clear Arabic language.
26:196
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَفِي زُبُرِ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ ١٩٦
And indeed, it is [mentioned] in the scriptures of former peoples.
26:197
أَوَلَمۡ يَكُن لَّهُمۡ ءَايَةً أَن يَعۡلَمَهُۥ عُلَمَٰٓؤُاْ بَنِيٓ إِسۡرَٰٓءِيلَ ١٩٧
And has it not been a sign to them that it is recognized by the scholars of the Children of Israel?
26:198
وَلَوۡ نَزَّلۡنَٰهُ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضِ ٱلۡأَعۡجَمِينَ ١٩٨
And even if We had revealed it to one among the foreigners1

26:199
فَقَرَأَهُۥ عَلَيۡهِم مَّا كَانُواْ بِهِۦ مُؤۡمِنِينَ ١٩٩
And he had recited it to them [perfectly],1 they would [still] not have been believers in it.

26:200
كَذَٰلِكَ سَلَكۡنَٰهُ فِي قُلُوبِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ ٢٠٠
Thus have We inserted it [i.e., disbelief] into the hearts of the criminals.
26:201
لَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِهِۦ حَتَّىٰ يَرَوُاْ ٱلۡعَذَابَ ٱلۡأَلِيمَ ٢٠١
They will not believe in it until they see the painful punishment.
26:202
فَيَأۡتِيَهُم بَغۡتَةٗ وَهُمۡ لَا يَشۡعُرُونَ ٢٠٢
And it will come to them suddenly while they perceive [it] not.
26:203
فَيَقُولُواْ هَلۡ نَحۡنُ مُنظَرُونَ ٢٠٣
And they will say, "May we be reprieved?"
26:204
أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا يَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَ ٢٠٤
So for Our punishment are they impatient?
26:205
أَفَرَءَيۡتَ إِن مَّتَّعۡنَٰهُمۡ سِنِينَ ٢٠٥
Then have you considered if We gave them enjoyment for years
26:206
ثُمَّ جَآءَهُم مَّا كَانُواْ يُوعَدُونَ ٢٠٦
And then there came to them that which they were promised?
