Commentary on 26:90–104

A man’s heaven and hell are not far away from him. Only a curtain intervenes between them. When Doomsday removes that curtain, every man will see that he was standing just on the edge of his heaven or hell, though the negligent man considered it something very distant. There were false leaders (mujrimun), who enjoyed an elevated position in the society of their times. They did not accept the call for Truth simply because, thereafter, their greatness would be finished. Their false pride prevented them from accepting the Truth. As a result, their followers likewise did not consider the call for Truth worth responding to. Equating the leaders with the Lord of the Universe means giving the same status to their utterances as to those of the Lord of the Universe. The Quranic commentator, Ibn Kathir, portrays them as carrying out the orders of their leaders ‘as the orders of the Lord of the Universe are carried out.’ Those who accepted the pronouncements of their leaders as if they were God’s commandments in the world, will themselves, in the Hereafter, call those leaders blameworthy, but it will be of no avail. The place where one was required to recognise and differentiate between the falsifiers and the men of Truth was the world and not the Hereafter.

26:84

And grant me a mention [i.e., reputation] of honor among later generations.

26:85

And place me among the inheritors of the Garden of Pleasure.

26:86

And forgive my father. Indeed, he has been of those astray.

26:87

And do not disgrace me on the Day they are [all] resurrected -

26:88

The Day when there will not benefit [anyone] wealth or children

26:89

But only one who comes to Allāh with a sound heart."

26:90

And Paradise will be brought near [that Day] to the righteous.

26:91

And Hellfire will be brought forth for the deviators,

26:92

And it will be said to them, "Where are those you used to worship

26:93

Other than Allāh? Can they help you or help themselves?"

26:94

So they will be overturned into it [i.e., Hellfire], they and the deviators

26:95

And the soldiers of Iblees, all together.

26:96

They will say while they dispute therein,

26:97

"By Allāh, we were indeed in manifest error

26:98

When we equated you with the Lord of the worlds.

26:99

And no one misguided us except the criminals.

26:100

So now we have no intercessors

26:101

And not a devoted friend.

26:102

Then if we only had a return [to the world] and could be of the believers..."1

1 translator’s note
  1. The conclusion of this verse is estimated as "...we would do this or that." ↩

26:103

Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

26:104

And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

26:105

The people of Noah denied the messengers1

1 translator’s note
  1. See footnote to 25:37. ↩

26:106

When their brother Noah said to them, "Will you not fear Allāh?

26:107

Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.

26:108

So fear Allāh and obey me.

26:109

And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.

26:110

So fear Allāh and obey me."

26:111

They said, "Should we believe you while you are followed by the lowest [class of people]?"
