فَنَادَتۡهُ ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ وَهُوَ قَآئِمٞ يُصَلِّي فِي ٱلۡمِحۡرَابِ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُبَشِّرُكَ بِيَحۡيَىٰ مُصَدِّقَۢا بِكَلِمَةٖ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَسَيِّدٗا وَحَصُورٗا وَنَبِيّٗا مِّنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ ٣٩
So the angels called him while he was standing in prayer in the chamber, "Indeed, Allāh gives you good tidings of John, confirming a word1 from Allāh and [who will be] honorable, abstaining [from women], and a prophet from among the righteous."

Commentary on 3:38–39
﴿هُنالِكَ دَعا زَكَرِيّا رَبَّهُ﴾ في ذَلِكَ المَكانِ، أوِ الوَقْتِ إذْ يُسْتَعارُ هُنا وثَمَّ وحَيْثُ لِلزَّمانِ، لِما رَأى كَرامَةَ مَرْيَمَ ومَنزِلَتَها مِنَ اللَّهِ تَعالى. ﴿قالَ رَبِّ هَبْ لِي مِن لَدُنْكَ ذُرِّيَّةً طَيِّبَةً﴾ كَما وهَبْتَها لِحِنَّةَ العَجُوزِ العاقِرِ. وقِيلَ لَمّا رَأى الفَواكِهَ في غَيْرِ أوانِها انْتَبَهَ عَلى جَوازِ وِلادَةِ العاقِرِ مِنَ الشَّيْخِ، فَسَألَ وقالَ: ﴿هَبْ لِي مِن لَدُنْكَ ذُرِّيَّةً﴾ لِأنَّهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ عَلى الوُجُوهِ المُعْتادَةِ وبِالأسْبابِ المَعْهُودَةِ. ﴿إنَّكَ سَمِيعُ الدُّعاءِ﴾ مُجِيبُهُ.
﴿فَنادَتْهُ المَلائِكَةُ﴾ أيْ مِن جِنْسِهِمْ كَقَوْلِهِمْ زَيْدٌ يَرْكَبُ الخَيْلَ. فَإنَّ المُنادِيَ كانَ جِبْرِيلُ وحْدَهُ. وقَرَأ حَمْزَةُ والكِسائِيُّ «فَناداهُ» بِالإمالَةِ والتَّذْكِيرِ. ﴿وَهُوَ قائِمٌ يُصَلِّي في المِحْرابِ﴾ أيْ قائِمًا في الصَّلاةِ، و (يُصَلِّي صِفَةُ قائِمٍ أوْ خَبَرٌ أوْ حالٌ آخَرَ أوْ حالٌ عَنِ الضَّمِيرِ في "قائِمٌ". ﴿أنَّ اللَّهَ يُبَشِّرُكَ بِيَحْيى﴾ أيْ بِأنَّ اللَّهَ. وقَرَأ نافِعٌ وابْنُ عامِرٍ بِالكَسْرِ عَلى إرادَةِ القَوْلِ، أوْ لِأنَّ النِّداءَ نَوْعٌ مِنهُ. وقَرَأ حَمْزَةُ والكِسائِيُّ (يُبَشِّرُكَ)، و (يَحْيى) اسْمٌ أعْجَمِيٌّ وإنْ جُعِلَ عَرَبِيًّا فَمَنعُ صَرْفِهِ لِلتَّعْرِيفِ ووَزْنِ الفِعْلِ. ﴿مُصَدِّقًا بِكَلِمَةٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ﴾ أيْ بِعِيسى عَلَيْهِ السَّلامُ، سُمِّيَ بِذَلِكَ لِأنَّهُ وُجِدَ بِأمْرِهِ تَعالى دُونَ أبٍ فَشابَهَ البِدْعِيّاتِ الَّتِي هي عالِمُ الأمْرِ، أوْ بِكِتابِ اللَّهِ، سُمِّيَ كَلِمَةً كَما قِيلَ كَلِمَةُ الحُوَيْدِرَةِ لِقَصِيدَتِهِ. ﴿وَسَيِّدًا﴾ يَسُودُ قَوْمَهُ ويَفُوقُهم وكانَ فائِقًا لِلنّاسِ كُلِّهِمْ في أنَّهُ ما هَمَّ بِمَعْصِيَةٍ قَطُّ. ﴿وَحَصُورًا﴾ مُبالِغًا في حَبْسِ النَّفْسِ عَنِ الشَّهَواتِ والمَلاهِي.
رُوِيَ أنَّهُ مَرَّ في صِباهُ بِصِبْيانٍ فَدَعَوْهُ إلى اللَّعِبِ فَقالَ ما لِلَّعِبِ خُلِقْتُ.
﴿وَنَبِيًّا مِنَ الصّالِحِينَ﴾ ناشِئًا مِنهم أوْ كائِنًا مِن عِدادِ مَن لَمْ يَأْتِ كَبِيرَةً ولا صَغِيرَةً.

3:38
هُنَالِكَ دَعَا زَكَرِيَّا رَبَّهُۥۖ قَالَ رَبِّ هَبۡ لِي مِن لَّدُنكَ ذُرِّيَّةٗ طَيِّبَةًۖ إِنَّكَ سَمِيعُ ٱلدُّعَآءِ ٣٨
At that, Zechariah called upon his Lord, saying, "My Lord, grant me from Yourself a good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication."
3:39

3:40
قَالَ رَبِّ أَنَّىٰ يَكُونُ لِي غُلَٰمٞ وَقَدۡ بَلَغَنِيَ ٱلۡكِبَرُ وَٱمۡرَأَتِي عَاقِرٞۖ قَالَ كَذَٰلِكَ ٱللَّهُ يَفۡعَلُ مَا يَشَآءُ ٤٠
He said, "My Lord, how will I have a boy when I have reached old age and my wife is barren?" He [the angel] said, "Such is Allāh; He does what He wills."
3:41
قَالَ رَبِّ ٱجۡعَل لِّيٓ ءَايَةٗۖ قَالَ ءَايَتُكَ أَلَّا تُكَلِّمَ ٱلنَّاسَ ثَلَٰثَةَ أَيَّامٍ إِلَّا رَمۡزٗاۗ وَٱذۡكُر رَّبَّكَ كَثِيرٗا وَسَبِّحۡ بِٱلۡعَشِيِّ وَٱلۡإِبۡكَٰرِ ٤١
He said, "My Lord, make for me a sign." He said, "Your sign is that you will not [be able to] speak to the people for three days except by gesture. And remember your Lord much and exalt [Him with praise] in the evening and the morning."
3:42
وَإِذۡ قَالَتِ ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ يَٰمَرۡيَمُ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ ٱصۡطَفَىٰكِ وَطَهَّرَكِ وَٱصۡطَفَىٰكِ عَلَىٰ نِسَآءِ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ ٤٢
And [mention] when the angels said, "O Mary, indeed Allāh has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above the women of the worlds.
3:43
يَٰمَرۡيَمُ ٱقۡنُتِي لِرَبِّكِ وَٱسۡجُدِي وَٱرۡكَعِي مَعَ ٱلرَّٰكِعِينَ ٤٣
O Mary, be devoutly obedient to your Lord and prostrate and bow with those who bow [in prayer]."
3:44
ذَٰلِكَ مِنۡ أَنۢبَآءِ ٱلۡغَيۡبِ نُوحِيهِ إِلَيۡكَۚ وَمَا كُنتَ لَدَيۡهِمۡ إِذۡ يُلۡقُونَ أَقۡلَٰمَهُمۡ أَيُّهُمۡ يَكۡفُلُ مَرۡيَمَ وَمَا كُنتَ لَدَيۡهِمۡ إِذۡ يَخۡتَصِمُونَ ٤٤
That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal to you, [O Muḥammad]. And you were not with them when they cast their pens1 as to which of them should be responsible for Mary. Nor were you with them when they disputed.

3:45
إِذۡ قَالَتِ ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ يَٰمَرۡيَمُ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُبَشِّرُكِ بِكَلِمَةٖ مِّنۡهُ ٱسۡمُهُ ٱلۡمَسِيحُ عِيسَى ٱبۡنُ مَرۡيَمَ وَجِيهٗا فِي ٱلدُّنۡيَا وَٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ وَمِنَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبِينَ ٤٥
[And mention] when the angels said, "O Mary, indeed Allāh gives you good tidings of a word1 from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary - distinguished in this world and the Hereafter and among those brought near [to Allāh].
