وَإِذۡ قَالَتِ ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ يَٰمَرۡيَمُ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ ٱصۡطَفَىٰكِ وَطَهَّرَكِ وَٱصۡطَفَىٰكِ عَلَىٰ نِسَآءِ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ ٤٢
And [mention] when the angels said, "O Mary, indeed Allāh has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above the women of the worlds.

Commentary on 3:42–43
﴿وَإذْ قالَتِ المَلائِكَةُ يا مَرْيَمُ إنَّ اللَّهَ اصْطَفاكِ وطَهَّرَكِ واصْطَفاكِ عَلى نِساءِ العالَمِينَ﴾ كَلَّمُوها شَفاهًا كَرامَةً لَها، ومَن أنْكَرَ الكَرامَةَ زَعَمَ أنَّ ذَلِكَ كانَتْ مُعْجِزَةً لِزَكَرِيّا أوْ إرْهاصًا لِنُبُوَّةِ عِيسى عَلَيْهِ الصَّلاةُ والسَّلامُ، فَإنَّ الإجْماعَ عَلى أنَّهُ سُبْحانَهُ وتَعالى لَمْ يَسْتَنْبِئِ امْرَأةً لِقَوْلِهِ تَعالى: ﴿وَما أرْسَلْنا مِن قَبْلِكَ إلا رِجالا﴾ وقِيلَ أُلْهِمُوها، والِاصْطِفاءُ الأوَّلُ تَقَبُّلُها مِن أُمِّها ولَمْ يَقْبَلْ قَبْلَها أُنْثى وتَفْرِيغُها لِلْعِبادَةِ وإغْناؤُها بِرِزْقِ الجَنَّةِ عَنِ الكَسْبِ وتَطْهِيرُها عَمّا يُسْتَقْذَرُ مِنَ النِّساءِ. والثّانِي هِدايَتُها وإرْسالُ المَلائِكَةِ إلَيْها، وتَخْصِيصُها بِالكَراماتِ السِّنِّيَّةِ كالوَلَدِ مِن غَيْرِ أبٍ وتَبْرِئَتُها مِمّا قَذَفَتْها بِهِ اليَهُودُ بِإنْطاقِ الطِّفْلِ وجَعْلِها وابْنِها آيَةً لِلْعالَمِينَ.
﴿يا مَرْيَمُ اقْنُتِي لِرَبِّكِ واسْجُدِي وارْكَعِي مَعَ الرّاكِعِينَ﴾ أُمِرَتْ بِالصَّلاةِ في الجَماعَةِ بِذِكْرِ أرْكانِها مُبالَغَةً في المُحافَظَةِ عَلَيْها، وقَدَّمَ السُّجُودَ عَلى الرُّكُوعِ إمّا لِكَوْنِهِ كَذَلِكَ في شَرِيعَتِهِمْ أوْ لِلتَّنْبِيهِ عَلى أنَّ الواوَ لا تُوجِبُ التَّرْتِيبَ، أوْ لِيَقْتَرِنِ ارْكَعِي بِالرّاكِعِينَ لِلْإيذانِ بِأنَّ مَن لَيْسَ في صَلاتِهِمْ رُكُوعٌ لَيْسُوا مُصَلِّينَ. وقِيلَ المُرادُ بِالقُنُوتِ إدامَةُ الطّاعَةِ كَقَوْلِهِ تَعالى: ﴿أمَّنْ هو قانِتٌ آناءَ اللَّيْلِ ساجِدًا وقائِمًا﴾ وبِالسُّجُودِ الصَّلاةُ كَقَوْلِهِ تَعالى: ﴿وَأدْبارَ السُّجُودِ﴾ وبِالرُّكُوعِ الخُشُوعُ والإخْباتُ.

3:38
هُنَالِكَ دَعَا زَكَرِيَّا رَبَّهُۥۖ قَالَ رَبِّ هَبۡ لِي مِن لَّدُنكَ ذُرِّيَّةٗ طَيِّبَةًۖ إِنَّكَ سَمِيعُ ٱلدُّعَآءِ ٣٨
At that, Zechariah called upon his Lord, saying, "My Lord, grant me from Yourself a good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication."
3:39
فَنَادَتۡهُ ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ وَهُوَ قَآئِمٞ يُصَلِّي فِي ٱلۡمِحۡرَابِ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُبَشِّرُكَ بِيَحۡيَىٰ مُصَدِّقَۢا بِكَلِمَةٖ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَسَيِّدٗا وَحَصُورٗا وَنَبِيّٗا مِّنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ ٣٩
So the angels called him while he was standing in prayer in the chamber, "Indeed, Allāh gives you good tidings of John, confirming a word1 from Allāh and [who will be] honorable, abstaining [from women], and a prophet from among the righteous."

3:40
قَالَ رَبِّ أَنَّىٰ يَكُونُ لِي غُلَٰمٞ وَقَدۡ بَلَغَنِيَ ٱلۡكِبَرُ وَٱمۡرَأَتِي عَاقِرٞۖ قَالَ كَذَٰلِكَ ٱللَّهُ يَفۡعَلُ مَا يَشَآءُ ٤٠
He said, "My Lord, how will I have a boy when I have reached old age and my wife is barren?" He [the angel] said, "Such is Allāh; He does what He wills."
3:41
قَالَ رَبِّ ٱجۡعَل لِّيٓ ءَايَةٗۖ قَالَ ءَايَتُكَ أَلَّا تُكَلِّمَ ٱلنَّاسَ ثَلَٰثَةَ أَيَّامٍ إِلَّا رَمۡزٗاۗ وَٱذۡكُر رَّبَّكَ كَثِيرٗا وَسَبِّحۡ بِٱلۡعَشِيِّ وَٱلۡإِبۡكَٰرِ ٤١
He said, "My Lord, make for me a sign." He said, "Your sign is that you will not [be able to] speak to the people for three days except by gesture. And remember your Lord much and exalt [Him with praise] in the evening and the morning."
3:42
وَإِذۡ قَالَتِ ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ يَٰمَرۡيَمُ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ ٱصۡطَفَىٰكِ وَطَهَّرَكِ وَٱصۡطَفَىٰكِ عَلَىٰ نِسَآءِ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ ٤٢
And [mention] when the angels said, "O Mary, indeed Allāh has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above the women of the worlds.
3:43
يَٰمَرۡيَمُ ٱقۡنُتِي لِرَبِّكِ وَٱسۡجُدِي وَٱرۡكَعِي مَعَ ٱلرَّٰكِعِينَ ٤٣
O Mary, be devoutly obedient to your Lord and prostrate and bow with those who bow [in prayer]."
3:44
ذَٰلِكَ مِنۡ أَنۢبَآءِ ٱلۡغَيۡبِ نُوحِيهِ إِلَيۡكَۚ وَمَا كُنتَ لَدَيۡهِمۡ إِذۡ يُلۡقُونَ أَقۡلَٰمَهُمۡ أَيُّهُمۡ يَكۡفُلُ مَرۡيَمَ وَمَا كُنتَ لَدَيۡهِمۡ إِذۡ يَخۡتَصِمُونَ ٤٤
That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal to you, [O Muḥammad]. And you were not with them when they cast their pens1 as to which of them should be responsible for Mary. Nor were you with them when they disputed.

3:45
إِذۡ قَالَتِ ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ يَٰمَرۡيَمُ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُبَشِّرُكِ بِكَلِمَةٖ مِّنۡهُ ٱسۡمُهُ ٱلۡمَسِيحُ عِيسَى ٱبۡنُ مَرۡيَمَ وَجِيهٗا فِي ٱلدُّنۡيَا وَٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ وَمِنَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبِينَ ٤٥
[And mention] when the angels said, "O Mary, indeed Allāh gives you good tidings of a word1 from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary - distinguished in this world and the Hereafter and among those brought near [to Allāh].
