ذَٰلِكَ مِنۡ أَنۢبَآءِ ٱلۡغَيۡبِ نُوحِيهِ إِلَيۡكَۚ وَمَا كُنتَ لَدَيۡهِمۡ إِذۡ يُلۡقُونَ أَقۡلَٰمَهُمۡ أَيُّهُمۡ يَكۡفُلُ مَرۡيَمَ وَمَا كُنتَ لَدَيۡهِمۡ إِذۡ يَخۡتَصِمُونَ ٤٤
That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal to you, [O Muḥammad]. And you were not with them when they cast their pens1 as to which of them should be responsible for Mary. Nor were you with them when they disputed.

Commentary on 3:44
ثم قال تعالى لرسوله [ عليه أفضل الصلوات والسلام ] بعدما أطلعه على جلية الأمر : ( ذلك من أنباء الغيب نوحيه إليك ) أي : نقصه عليك ( وما كنت لديهم إذ يلقون أقلامهم أيهم يكفل مريم وما كنت لديهم إذ يختصمون ) أي : ما كنت عندهم يا محمد فتخبرهم عنهم معاينة عما جرى ، بل أطلعك الله على ذلك كأنك كنت حاضرا وشاهدا لما كان من أمرهم حين اقترعوا في شأن مريم أيهم يكفلها ، وذلك لرغبتهم في الأجر .
قال ابن جرير : حدثنا القاسم ، حدثنا الحسين ، حدثني حجاج ، عن ابن جريج ، عن القاسم بن أبي بزة ، أنه أخبره عن عكرمة - وأبي بكر ، عن عكرمة - قال : ثم خرجت بها - يعني أم مريم بمريم - تحملها في خرقها إلى بني الكاهن بن هارون أخي موسى ، عليهما السلام - قال : وهم يومئذ يلون في بيت المقدس ما يلي الحجبة من الكعبة - فقالت لهم : دونكم هذه النذيرة فإني حررتها وهي ابنتي ، ولا تدخل الكنيسة حائض ، وأنا لا أردها إلى بيتي ؟ فقالوا هذه ابنة إمامنا - وكان عمران يؤمهم في الصلاة - وصاحب قرباننا ، فقال زكريا : ادفعوها إلي : فإن خالتها تحتي . فقالوا : لا تطيب أنفسنا ، هي ابنة إمامنا فذلك حين اقترعوا بأقلامهم عليها التي يكتبون بها التوراة ، فقرعهم زكريا ، فكفلها
وقد ذكر عكرمة أيضا ، والسدي ، وقتادة ، والربيع بن أنس ، وغير واحد - دخل حديث بعضهم في بعض - أنهم دخلوا إلى نهر الأردن واقترعوا هنالك على أن يلقوا أقلامهم [ فيه ] فأيهم ثبت في جرية الماء فهو كافلها ، فألقوا أقلامهم فاحتملها الماء إلا قلم زكريا ثبت . ويقال : إنه ذهب صعدا يشق جرية الماء ، وكان مع ذلك كبيرهم وسيدهم ، وعالمهم وإمامهم ونبيهم صلوات الله وسلامه عليه سائر النبيين والمرسلين .

3:38
هُنَالِكَ دَعَا زَكَرِيَّا رَبَّهُۥۖ قَالَ رَبِّ هَبۡ لِي مِن لَّدُنكَ ذُرِّيَّةٗ طَيِّبَةًۖ إِنَّكَ سَمِيعُ ٱلدُّعَآءِ ٣٨
At that, Zechariah called upon his Lord, saying, "My Lord, grant me from Yourself a good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication."
3:39
فَنَادَتۡهُ ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ وَهُوَ قَآئِمٞ يُصَلِّي فِي ٱلۡمِحۡرَابِ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُبَشِّرُكَ بِيَحۡيَىٰ مُصَدِّقَۢا بِكَلِمَةٖ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَسَيِّدٗا وَحَصُورٗا وَنَبِيّٗا مِّنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ ٣٩
So the angels called him while he was standing in prayer in the chamber, "Indeed, Allāh gives you good tidings of John, confirming a word1 from Allāh and [who will be] honorable, abstaining [from women], and a prophet from among the righteous."

3:40
قَالَ رَبِّ أَنَّىٰ يَكُونُ لِي غُلَٰمٞ وَقَدۡ بَلَغَنِيَ ٱلۡكِبَرُ وَٱمۡرَأَتِي عَاقِرٞۖ قَالَ كَذَٰلِكَ ٱللَّهُ يَفۡعَلُ مَا يَشَآءُ ٤٠
He said, "My Lord, how will I have a boy when I have reached old age and my wife is barren?" He [the angel] said, "Such is Allāh; He does what He wills."
3:41
قَالَ رَبِّ ٱجۡعَل لِّيٓ ءَايَةٗۖ قَالَ ءَايَتُكَ أَلَّا تُكَلِّمَ ٱلنَّاسَ ثَلَٰثَةَ أَيَّامٍ إِلَّا رَمۡزٗاۗ وَٱذۡكُر رَّبَّكَ كَثِيرٗا وَسَبِّحۡ بِٱلۡعَشِيِّ وَٱلۡإِبۡكَٰرِ ٤١
He said, "My Lord, make for me a sign." He said, "Your sign is that you will not [be able to] speak to the people for three days except by gesture. And remember your Lord much and exalt [Him with praise] in the evening and the morning."
3:42
وَإِذۡ قَالَتِ ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ يَٰمَرۡيَمُ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ ٱصۡطَفَىٰكِ وَطَهَّرَكِ وَٱصۡطَفَىٰكِ عَلَىٰ نِسَآءِ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ ٤٢
And [mention] when the angels said, "O Mary, indeed Allāh has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above the women of the worlds.
3:43
يَٰمَرۡيَمُ ٱقۡنُتِي لِرَبِّكِ وَٱسۡجُدِي وَٱرۡكَعِي مَعَ ٱلرَّٰكِعِينَ ٤٣
O Mary, be devoutly obedient to your Lord and prostrate and bow with those who bow [in prayer]."
3:44
ذَٰلِكَ مِنۡ أَنۢبَآءِ ٱلۡغَيۡبِ نُوحِيهِ إِلَيۡكَۚ وَمَا كُنتَ لَدَيۡهِمۡ إِذۡ يُلۡقُونَ أَقۡلَٰمَهُمۡ أَيُّهُمۡ يَكۡفُلُ مَرۡيَمَ وَمَا كُنتَ لَدَيۡهِمۡ إِذۡ يَخۡتَصِمُونَ ٤٤

3:45
إِذۡ قَالَتِ ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ يَٰمَرۡيَمُ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُبَشِّرُكِ بِكَلِمَةٖ مِّنۡهُ ٱسۡمُهُ ٱلۡمَسِيحُ عِيسَى ٱبۡنُ مَرۡيَمَ وَجِيهٗا فِي ٱلدُّنۡيَا وَٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ وَمِنَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبِينَ ٤٥
[And mention] when the angels said, "O Mary, indeed Allāh gives you good tidings of a word1 from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary - distinguished in this world and the Hereafter and among those brought near [to Allāh].
