أَوَلَمۡ يَسِيرُواْ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَيَنظُرُواْ كَيۡفَ كَانَ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡ وَكَانُوٓاْ أَشَدَّ مِنۡهُمۡ قُوَّةٗۚ وَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِيُعۡجِزَهُۥ مِن شَيۡءٖ فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَلَا فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَلِيمٗا قَدِيرٗا ٤٤
Have they not traveled through the land and observed how was the end of those before them? And they were greater than them in power. But Allāh is not to be caused failure [i.e., prevented] by anything in the heavens or on the earth. Indeed, He is ever Knowing and Competent.

Commentary on 35:44–45
"Dan apakah mereka tidak berjalan di muka bumi, lalu me-lihat bagaimana kesudahan orang-orang yang sebelum mereka, sedangkan orang-orang itu adalah lebih besar kekuatannya dari mereka? Dan tiada sesuatu pun yang dapat melemahkan Allah, baik di langit maupun di bumi. Sesungguhnya Allah Maha Menge-tahui lagi Mahakuasa. Dan kalau sekiranya Allah menyiksa ma-nusia disebabkan usahanya, niscaya Dia tidak akan meninggalkan di atas permukaan bumi suatu makhluk yang melata pun, akan tetapi Allah menangguhkan mereka, sampai waktu yang tertentu; maka apabila datang ajal mereka, maka sesungguhnya Allah Maha Melihat hamba-hambaNya." (Fathir: 44-45).
(44) Allah سبحانه وتعالى menghimbau untuk melakukan perjalanan di muka bumi dengan jiwa dan raga untuk mengambil pelajaran, bukan sekedar melihat yang membawa kepada sikap lalai (bersan-tai-santai), melainkan supaya mereka memperhatikan kepada akhir kesudahan orang-orang sebelum mereka, yaitu mereka yang men-dustakan para rasul, yang jumlah, harta, dan anak-anaknya lebih banyak daripada mereka dan lebih kuat, dan telah meramaikan bumi lebih dari apa yang dilakukan oleh mereka. Namun, tatkala azab datang menimpa mereka, maka sedikitpun kekuatan yang mereka miliki itu tidak berguna, harta dan anak-anak mereka sama sekali tidak bermanfaat. Kuasa dan masyi`ah (kehendak) Allah ber-laku terhadap mereka. ﴾ وَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِيُعۡجِزَهُۥ مِن شَيۡءٖ فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَلَا فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ ﴿ "Dan tiada sesuatu pun yang dapat melemahkan Allah, baik di langit maupun di bumi," karena kesempurnaan ilmu dan KuasaNya. ﴾ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَلِيمٗا قَدِيرٗا ﴿ "Sesungguhnya Allah Maha Mengetahui lagi Mahakuasa."
(45) Kemudian Allah سبحانه وتعالى menyebutkan kesempurnaan sifat santunNya dan betapa Dia menangguhkan para pelaku maksiat dan dosa, seraya berfirman, ﴾ وَلَوۡ يُؤَاخِذُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلنَّاسَ بِمَا كَسَبُواْ ﴿ "Dan kalau sekiranya Allah menyiksa manusia disebabkan usahanya," yaitu berupa dosa-dosa, ﴾ مَا تَرَكَ عَلَىٰ ظَهۡرِهَا مِن دَآبَّةٖ ﴿ "niscaya Dia tidak akan meninggalkan di atas permukaan bumi suatu makhluk yang melata pun," yakni, niscaya siksaan itu merata hingga menimpa hewan-hewan yang tidak mukallaf. ﴾ وَلَٰكِن ﴿ "Akan tetapi" mereka ditangguhkan oleh Allah سبحانه وتعالى dan Dia tidak mengabaikan mereka.﴾ يُؤَخِّرُهُمۡ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٖ مُّسَمّٗىۖ فَإِذَا جَآءَ أَجَلُهُمۡ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ بِعِبَادِهِۦ بَصِيرَۢا ﴿ "Allah menangguhkan mereka sampai waktu yang tertentu; maka apabila datang ajal mereka, maka sesungguhnya Allah Maha Melihat hamba-hambaNya." Lalu Dia akan memberikan balasan terhadap mereka sesuai dengan perbuatan baik atau buruk yang telah Dia ketahui dari mereka.

35:39
هُوَ ٱلَّذِي جَعَلَكُمۡ خَلَٰٓئِفَ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ فَمَن كَفَرَ فَعَلَيۡهِ كُفۡرُهُۥۖ وَلَا يَزِيدُ ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ كُفۡرُهُمۡ عِندَ رَبِّهِمۡ إِلَّا مَقۡتٗاۖ وَلَا يَزِيدُ ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ كُفۡرُهُمۡ إِلَّا خَسَارٗا ٣٩
It is He who has made you successors upon the earth. And whoever disbelieves - upon him will be [the consequence of] his disbelief. And the disbelief of the disbelievers does not increase them in the sight of their Lord except in hatred; and the disbelief of the disbelievers does not increase them except in loss.
35:40
قُلۡ أَرَءَيۡتُمۡ شُرَكَآءَكُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ تَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ أَرُونِي مَاذَا خَلَقُواْ مِنَ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ أَمۡ لَهُمۡ شِرۡكٞ فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ أَمۡ ءَاتَيۡنَٰهُمۡ كِتَٰبٗا فَهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَيِّنَتٖ مِّنۡهُۚ بَلۡ إِن يَعِدُ ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ بَعۡضُهُم بَعۡضًا إِلَّا غُرُورًا ٤٠
Say, "Have you considered1 your 'partners' whom you invoke besides Allāh? Show me what they have created from the earth, or have they partnership [with Him] in the heavens? Or have We given them a book so they are [standing] on evidence therefrom? [No], rather, the wrongdoers do not promise each other except delusion."2
35:41
۞ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُمۡسِكُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ أَن تَزُولَاۚ وَلَئِن زَالَتَآ إِنۡ أَمۡسَكَهُمَا مِنۡ أَحَدٖ مِّنۢ بَعۡدِهِۦٓۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ حَلِيمًا غَفُورٗا ٤١
Indeed, Allāh holds the heavens and the earth, lest they cease. And if they should cease, no one could hold them [in place] after Him. Indeed, He is Forbearing1 and Forgiving.

35:42
وَأَقۡسَمُواْ بِٱللَّهِ جَهۡدَ أَيۡمَٰنِهِمۡ لَئِن جَآءَهُمۡ نَذِيرٞ لَّيَكُونُنَّ أَهۡدَىٰ مِنۡ إِحۡدَى ٱلۡأُمَمِۖ فَلَمَّا جَآءَهُمۡ نَذِيرٞ مَّا زَادَهُمۡ إِلَّا نُفُورًا ٤٢
And they swore by Allāh their strongest oaths that if a warner came to them, they would be more guided than [any] one of the [previous] nations. But when a warner came to them, it did not increase them except in aversion
35:43
ٱسۡتِكۡبَارٗا فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَكۡرَ ٱلسَّيِّيِٕۚ وَلَا يَحِيقُ ٱلۡمَكۡرُ ٱلسَّيِّئُ إِلَّا بِأَهۡلِهِۦۚ فَهَلۡ يَنظُرُونَ إِلَّا سُنَّتَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَۚ فَلَن تَجِدَ لِسُنَّتِ ٱللَّهِ تَبۡدِيلٗاۖ وَلَن تَجِدَ لِسُنَّتِ ٱللَّهِ تَحۡوِيلًا ٤٣
[Due to] arrogance in the land and plotting of evil; but the evil plot does not encompass except its own people. Then do they await except the way [i.e., fate] of the former peoples? But you will never find in the way [i.e., established method] of Allāh any change, and you will never find in the way of Allāh1 any alteration.2
35:44
