Commentary on 37:180–182

Allah glorified Himself and states that He is far above what the lying wrongdoers say about Him;

Allah says:

(Glorified be your Lord, the Lord of Al-`Izzah!) meaning, the Owner of might and power Whom none can resist.

((He is free) from what they attribute unto Him!) means, from what these lying fabricators say.

(And Salam be on the Messengers!) means, may the peace of Allah be upon them in this world and in the Hereafter, because what they say about their Lord is sound, correct and true.

(And all the praises and thanks be to Allah, Lord of all that exists.) means, praise be to Him at the beginning and end of all things. Because Tasbih (glorification) implies a declaration of being free from all shortcomings, the two ideas appear together here and in many places in the Qur'an. Allah says:

(Glorified be your Lord, the Lord of Al-`Izzah! (He is free) from what they attribute unto Him! And Salam (peace!) be on the Messengers! And all the praises and thanks be to Allah, Lord of all that exists.) Sa`id bin Abi `Arubah narrated that Qatadah said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

(When you send Salam on me, send Salam on all the Messengers, for I am one of the Messengers.)" This was recorded by Ibn Jarir and Ibn Abi Hatim. Abu Muhammad Al-Baghawi recorded in his Tafsir that `Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "Whoever wants a greater measure of reward on the Day of Resurrection, let him say at the end of any gathering,

(Glorified be your Lord, the Lord of honor, glory and power! (He is free) from what they attribute unto Him! And Salam (peace!) be on the Messengers! And all the praises and thanks be to Allah, Lord of all that exists)." Other Hadiths concerning the expiation for any wrongs that may have occurred during a gathering prescribe saying the words: "Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise. There is no God except You; I seek your forgiveness and I repent to you. " I have written a chapter dealing exclusively with this topic. This is the end of the Tafsir of Surat As-Saffat. And Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, knows best.

37:154

What is [wrong] with you? How do you make judgement?

37:155

Then will you not be reminded?

37:156

Or do you have a clear authority?1

1 translator’s note
  1. i.e., evidence. ↩

37:157

Then produce your scripture, if you should be truthful.

37:158

And they have made [i.e., claimed] between Him and the jinn a lineage, but the jinn have already known that they [who made such claims] will be brought [to punishment].

37:159

Exalted is Allāh above what they describe,

37:160

Except the chosen servants of Allāh [who do not share in that sin].

37:161

So indeed, you [disbelievers] and whatever you worship,

37:162

You cannot tempt [anyone] away from Him

37:163

Except he who is to [enter and] burn in the Hellfire.1

1 translator’s note
  1. Due to his disbelief and evil deeds. ↩

37:164

[The angels say],1 "There is not among us any except that he has a known position.2

2 translator’s notes
  1. Refuting what the disbelievers had said about them.

[1311] For worship. Or "an assigned task" to perform.

    ↩
  2. ↩

37:165

And indeed, we are those who line up [for prayer].

37:166

And indeed, we are those who exalt Allāh."

37:167

And indeed, they [i.e., the disbelievers] used to say,1

1 translator’s note
  1. Before the revelation of the Qur’ān. ↩

37:168

"If we had a message from [those of] the former peoples,

37:169

We would have been the chosen servants of Allāh."

37:170

But they disbelieved in it,1 so they are going to know.

1 translator’s note
  1. i.e., in their own message, the Qur’ān. ↩

37:171

And Our word [i.e., decree] has already preceded for Our servants, the messengers,

37:172

[That] indeed, they would be those given victory

37:173

And [that] indeed, Our soldiers [i.e., the believers] will be those who overcome.1

1 translator’s note
  1. If not in this world, then definitely in the Hereafter. ↩

37:174

So, [O Muḥammad], leave them for a time.

37:175

And see [what will befall] them, for they are going to see.

37:176

Then for Our punishment are they impatient?

37:177

But when it descends in their territory, then evil is the morning of those who were warned.

37:178

And leave them for a time.

37:179

And see, for they are going to see.

37:180

Exalted is your Lord, the Lord of might, above what they describe.

37:181

And peace upon the messengers.

37:182

And praise to Allāh, Lord of the worlds.
