Commentary on 38:65–68

Commentary

A Gist of the Subjects of the Surah

In verse 65, it was said: قُلْ إِنَّمَا أَنَا مُنذِرٌ‌ (Say, “ I am only a warner) At the beginning of the Surah, you have seen that the real objective of this Surah was the affirmation of the prophethood of the noble Prophet ﷺ refutation of what the disbelievers said. In this connection, events relating to blessed prophets of the past were mentioned for two reasons. Firstly, that they bring comfort to the Holy Prophet ﷺ and that he too observes patience against the absurd allegations leveled by those who disbelieved - the same patience as observed by the blessed prophets before him. Secondly, that those who were denying the credentials of a true prophet should themselves learn their lesson through these events. After that, another method was used to invite the disbelievers to Islam. For this purpose, their attention was drawn to the good end of the believers, as opposed to the severe punishment awaiting disbelievers, while they were also warned that the people they were following were the ones who were prompting them to belie the true messenger of Allah, and the same people will refuse to help you in any way on the Day of Judgment, in fact, they would paint you black and you would curse them.

After a delineation of these subjects, the text has, in the concluding part, reverted to the main purpose, that is, it takes up the confirmation of prophethood of the Holy Prophet ﷺ . In this process, along with a presentation of necessary arguments, a compassionate invitation to believe has also been given.

38:62

And they will say, "Why do we not see men whom we used to count among the worst?1

38:63

Is it [because] we took them in ridicule, or has [our] vision turned away from them?"

38:64

Indeed, that is truth [i.e., reality] - the quarreling of the people of the Fire.

38:65

Say, [O Muḥammad], "I am only a warner, and there is not any deity except Allāh, the One, the Prevailing,1

38:67

Say, "It is great news

38:68

From which you turn away.

38:69

I had no knowledge of the exalted assembly [of angels] when they were disputing [the creation of Adam].

38:70

It has not been revealed to me except that I am a clear warner."

38:71

[So mention] when your Lord said to the angels, "Indeed, I am going to create a human being from clay.

38:72

So when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My [created] soul,1 then fall down to him in prostration."

38:73

So the angels prostrated - all of them entirely,

38:74

Except Iblees;1 he was arrogant and became among the disbelievers.

1 translator’s note
  1. See footnote to 2:34. ↩

38:75

[Allāh] said, "O Iblees, what prevented you from prostrating to that which I created with My hands?1 Were you arrogant [then], or were you [already] among the haughty?"

1 translator’s note
  1. See footnote to 2:19. ↩

38:76

He said, "I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay."

38:77

[Allāh] said, "Then get out of it [i.e., Paradise], for indeed, you are expelled.

38:78

And indeed, upon you is My curse until the Day of Recompense."

38:79

He said, "My Lord, then reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected."

38:80

[Allāh] said, "So indeed, you are of those reprieved

38:81

Until the Day of the time well-known."

38:82

[Iblees] said, "By Your might, I will surely mislead them all
