فَأَرۡسَلۡنَا عَلَيۡهِمۡ رِيحٗا صَرۡصَرٗا فِيٓ أَيَّامٖ نَّحِسَاتٖ لِّنُذِيقَهُمۡ عَذَابَ ٱلۡخِزۡيِ فِي ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡيَاۖ وَلَعَذَابُ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ أَخۡزَىٰۖ وَهُمۡ لَا يُنصَرُونَ ١٦
So We sent upon them a screaming wind during days of misfortune to make them taste the punishment of disgrace in the worldly life; but the punishment of the Hereafter is more disgracing, and they will not be helped.

Commentary on 41:16
(فأرسلنا عليهم ريحاً صرصراً) الصرصر الريح الشديدة الصوت من الصرة وهي الصيحة، قال أبو عبيدة: معنى صرصر شديدة عاصفة، وقال الفراء: هي الباردة تحرق كما تحرق النار، وقال عكرمة وسعيد بن جبير وقتادة: هي الباردة، وقال مجاهد: هي الشديدة السموم، والأولى تفسيرها بالبرد لأن الصر في كلام العرب البرد، قال ابن السكيت: صرصر يجوز أن يكون من الصر وهو البرد، ومن صرصر الباب، ومن الصرة وهي الصيحة، ومنه (وأقبلت امرأته في صرة).
ثم بين سبحانه وقت نزول ذلك العذاب عليهم فقال:
(فِي أَيَّامٍ نَحِسَاتٍ) أي نكدات مشئومات ذوات نحوس عليهم، قال مجاهد وقتادة: كن آخر شوال من يوم الأربعاء إلى يوم الأربعاء، وذلك (سبع ليال وثمانية أيام حسوماً) قيل: وما عذب قوم إلا في يوم الأربعاء، وقيل: نحسات باردات، حكاه الثعلبي، وقيل: متتابعات، وقيل: شداد، وقيل: ذوات غبار وتراب ثائر، لا يكاد يبصر فيه. قرأ نافع وابن كثير وأبو عمرو نحسات بإسكان الحاء على أنه جمع نحس، وقرأ الباقون بكسرها، واختار أبو حاتم الأولى لقوله (في يوم نحس مستمر)، واختار أبو عبيد الثاني (لنذيقهم) أي لكي نذيقهم.
(عذاب الخزي في الحياة الدنيا) والخزي هو الذل والهوان بسبب ذلك الاستكبار، وهو في الأصل صفة المعذب، وإنما وصف به العذاب على الإِسناد المجازي للمبالغة، فهو من إضافة الموصوف إلى صفته أي العذاب الخزي، ولهذا جاء: (ولعذاب الآخرة أخزى) أي أشد إهانة وذلاً، فلو لم يكن من إضافة الموصوف إلى صفته لم يأت بلفظ أخزى الذي يقتضي المشاركة (وهم لا ينصرون) أي لا يمنعون من العذاب النازل بهم ولا يدفعه عنهم دافع، ثم ذكر حال الطائفة الأخرى فقال:

41:12
فَقَضَىٰهُنَّ سَبۡعَ سَمَٰوَاتٖ فِي يَوۡمَيۡنِ وَأَوۡحَىٰ فِي كُلِّ سَمَآءٍ أَمۡرَهَاۚ وَزَيَّنَّا ٱلسَّمَآءَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا بِمَصَٰبِيحَ وَحِفۡظٗاۚ ذَٰلِكَ تَقۡدِيرُ ٱلۡعَزِيزِ ٱلۡعَلِيمِ ١٢
And He completed them as seven heavens within two days and inspired [i.e., made known] in each heaven its command. And We adorned the nearest heaven with lamps [i.e., stars, for beauty] and as protection.1 That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.

41:13
فَإِنۡ أَعۡرَضُواْ فَقُلۡ أَنذَرۡتُكُمۡ صَٰعِقَةٗ مِّثۡلَ صَٰعِقَةِ عَادٖ وَثَمُودَ ١٣
But if they turn away, then say, "I have warned you of a thunderbolt like the thunderbolt [that struck] ʿAad and Thamūd.
41:14
إِذۡ جَآءَتۡهُمُ ٱلرُّسُلُ مِنۢ بَيۡنِ أَيۡدِيهِمۡ وَمِنۡ خَلۡفِهِمۡ أَلَّا تَعۡبُدُوٓاْ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَۖ قَالُواْ لَوۡ شَآءَ رَبُّنَا لَأَنزَلَ مَلَٰٓئِكَةٗ فَإِنَّا بِمَآ أُرۡسِلۡتُم بِهِۦ كَٰفِرُونَ ١٤
[That occurred] when the messengers had come to them before them and after them, [saying], "Worship not except Allāh." They said, "If our Lord had willed,1 He would have sent down the angels, so indeed we, in that with which you have been sent, are disbelievers."

41:15
فَأَمَّا عَادٞ فَٱسۡتَكۡبَرُواْ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ بِغَيۡرِ ٱلۡحَقِّ وَقَالُواْ مَنۡ أَشَدُّ مِنَّا قُوَّةًۖ أَوَلَمۡ يَرَوۡاْ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَهُمۡ هُوَ أَشَدُّ مِنۡهُمۡ قُوَّةٗۖ وَكَانُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا يَجۡحَدُونَ ١٥
As for ʿAad, they were arrogant upon the earth without right and said, "Who is greater than us in strength?" Did they not consider that Allāh who created them was greater than them in strength? But they were rejecting Our signs.
41:16

41:17
وَأَمَّا ثَمُودُ فَهَدَيۡنَٰهُمۡ فَٱسۡتَحَبُّواْ ٱلۡعَمَىٰ عَلَى ٱلۡهُدَىٰ فَأَخَذَتۡهُمۡ صَٰعِقَةُ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٱلۡهُونِ بِمَا كَانُواْ يَكۡسِبُونَ ١٧
And as for Thamūd, We guided them, but they preferred blindness over guidance, so the thunderbolt of humiliating punishment seized them for what they used to earn.
41:18
وَنَجَّيۡنَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَكَانُواْ يَتَّقُونَ ١٨
And We saved those who believed and used to fear Allāh.
41:19
وَيَوۡمَ يُحۡشَرُ أَعۡدَآءُ ٱللَّهِ إِلَى ٱلنَّارِ فَهُمۡ يُوزَعُونَ ١٩
And [mention, O Muḥammad], the Day when the enemies of Allāh will be gathered to the Fire while they are [driven], assembled in rows,
41:20
حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا مَا جَآءُوهَا شَهِدَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ سَمۡعُهُمۡ وَأَبۡصَٰرُهُمۡ وَجُلُودُهُم بِمَا كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ ٢٠
Until, when they reach it, their hearing and their eyes and their skins will testify against them of what they used to do.
