فَأَهۡلَكۡنَآ أَشَدَّ مِنۡهُم بَطۡشٗا وَمَضَىٰ مَثَلُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ ٨
And We destroyed greater than them1 in [striking] power, and the example of the former peoples has preceded.

Commentary on 43:6–8
وَكَمْ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن نَّبِيٍّ فِي الْأَوَّلِينَ؛ به ميان پيشينيان پيامبران بسياري فرستاديم. وَمَا يَأْتِيهِم مِّن نَّبِيٍّ إِلَّا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِؤُون؛ و هيچ پيامبري بر آنها، مبعوث نمي شد مگر آنکه مسخره اش مي کردند. فَأَهْلَكْنَا أَشَدَّ مِنْهُم بَطْشًا وَمَضَى مَثَلُ الْأَوَّلِينَ؛ آنها را که از ايشان نيرومندتر بودند هلاک کرديم و داستان پيشينيان گذشت.
(6 - 8) خداوند متعال می‌فرماید که این سنّت و شیوۀ ما در میان مردم است که آنها را بدون پیامبر و کتاب، بیهوده رها نمی‌کنیم. (﴿وَكَمۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن نَّبِيّٖ فِي ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ﴾) و چه بسیار پیامبران را در میان پیشینیان فرستاده‌ایم که آنها را به پرستش خدای یگانه -که شریکی ندارد- فرمان می‌دادند، اما امّت‌ها همواره آنان را تکذیب می‌کردند. (﴿وَمَا يَأۡتِيهِم مِّن نَّبِيٍّ إِلَّا كَانُواۡ بِهِۦ يَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ﴾) و هیچ پیامبری به نزد آنان نمی‌آمد مگر آنکه او را به ریشخند و مسخره می‌گرفتند، و آنچه را که آورده بود انکار می‌کردند، و با خود بزرگ بینی حق را نمی‌پذیرفتند. (﴿فَأَهۡلَكۡنَآ أَشَدَّ مِنۡهُم بَطۡشٗا﴾) و ما کسانی را هلاک کردیم که از اینها قدرت بیشتری داشتند، و کارهای مهم‌تری می‌کردند، و نشانه‌ها و آثار بیشتری در زمین داشتند. (﴿وَمَضَىٰ مَثَلُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ﴾) و حکایات و نمونه‌های زندگی‌شان گذشته است، و برخی از آنها را برایتان بیان کرده‌ایم که مایۀ عبرت هستند و [شما را] از تکذیب بر حذر می‌دارند.

42:52
وَكَذَٰلِكَ أَوۡحَيۡنَآ إِلَيۡكَ رُوحٗا مِّنۡ أَمۡرِنَاۚ مَا كُنتَ تَدۡرِي مَا ٱلۡكِتَٰبُ وَلَا ٱلۡإِيمَٰنُ وَلَٰكِن جَعَلۡنَٰهُ نُورٗا نَّهۡدِي بِهِۦ مَن نَّشَآءُ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَاۚ وَإِنَّكَ لَتَهۡدِيٓ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطٖ مُّسۡتَقِيمٖ ٥٢
And thus We have revealed to you an inspiration of Our command [i.e., the Qur’ān]. You did not know what is the Book or [what is] faith, but We have made it a light by which We guide whom We will of Our servants. And indeed, [O Muḥammad], you guide to a straight path -
42:53
صِرَٰطِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّذِي لَهُۥ مَا فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِۗ أَلَآ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ تَصِيرُ ٱلۡأُمُورُ ٥٣
The path of Allāh, to whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Unquestionably, to Allāh do [all] matters evolve [i.e., return].

43:2
وَٱلۡكِتَٰبِ ٱلۡمُبِينِ ٢
By the clear Book,
43:3
إِنَّا جَعَلۡنَٰهُ قُرۡءَٰنًا عَرَبِيّٗا لَّعَلَّكُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ٣
Indeed, We have made it an Arabic Qur’ān that you might understand.
43:4
وَإِنَّهُۥ فِيٓ أُمِّ ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ لَدَيۡنَا لَعَلِيٌّ حَكِيمٌ ٤
And indeed it is, in the Mother of the Book1 with Us, exalted and full of wisdom.2
43:5
أَفَنَضۡرِبُ عَنكُمُ ٱلذِّكۡرَ صَفۡحًا أَن كُنتُمۡ قَوۡمٗا مُّسۡرِفِينَ ٥
Then should We turn the message away, disregarding you, because you are a transgressing people?
43:6
وَكَمۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن نَّبِيّٖ فِي ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ ٦
And how many a prophet We sent among the former peoples,
43:7
وَمَا يَأۡتِيهِم مِّن نَّبِيٍّ إِلَّا كَانُواْ بِهِۦ يَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ٧
But there would not come to them a prophet except that they used to ridicule him.
43:8
فَأَهۡلَكۡنَآ أَشَدَّ مِنۡهُم بَطۡشٗا وَمَضَىٰ مَثَلُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ ٨

43:9
وَلَئِن سَأَلۡتَهُم مَّنۡ خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ لَيَقُولُنَّ خَلَقَهُنَّ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلۡعَلِيمُ ٩
And if you should ask them, "Who has created the heavens and the earth?" they would surely say, "They were created by the Exalted in Might, the Knowing,"
43:10
ٱلَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ مَهۡدٗا وَجَعَلَ لَكُمۡ فِيهَا سُبُلٗا لَّعَلَّكُمۡ تَهۡتَدُونَ ١٠
[The one] who has made for you the earth a bed and made for you upon it roads that you might be guided
