Commentary on 54:18–22

The Story of ` Ad Allah states that ` Ad, the People of Hud, denied their Messenger, just as the people of Nuh did.

So, Allah sent on them,

(against them a violently cold (Sarsar) wind), means, a bitterly cold and furious wind,

(on a day of calamity), against them, according to Ad-Dahhak, Qatadah and As-Suddi,

(continuous), upon them because the calamity, torment and destruction that they suffered in this life on that day continued with that of the Hereafter,

(Plucking out men as if they were uprooted stems of date palms.) The wind would pluck one of them and raise him high, until he could no longer be seen, and then violently send him down on his head to the ground. His head would be smashed and only his body would be left, headless,

(as if they were uprooted stems of date palms. Then, how was My torment and My warnings And We have indeed made the Qur'an easy to understand and remember; then is there any that will remember)

54:7

Their eyes humbled, they will emerge from the graves as if they were locusts spreading,

54:8

Racing ahead toward the Caller. The disbelievers will say, "This is a difficult Day."

54:9

The people of Noah denied before them, and they denied Our servant and said, "A madman," and he was repelled.

54:10

So he invoked his Lord, "Indeed, I am overpowered, so help."

54:11

Then We opened the gates of the heaven with rain pouring down

54:12

And caused the earth to burst with springs, and the waters met for a matter already predestined.

54:13

And We carried him on a [construction of] planks and nails,

54:14

Sailing under Our observation as reward for he who had been denied.

54:15

And We left it as a sign, so is there any who will remember?

54:16

And how [severe] were My punishment and warning.1

1 translator’s note
  1. To those after them, who were expected to derive a lesson from previous occurrences. ↩

54:17

And We have certainly made the Qur’ān easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?

54:18

ʿAad denied; and how [severe] were My punishment and warning.

54:19

Indeed, We sent upon them a screaming wind on a day of continuous misfortune,

54:20

Extracting the people1 as if they were trunks of palm trees uprooted.

1 translator’s note
  1. From their hiding places. ↩

54:21

And how [severe] were My punishment and warning.

54:22

And We have certainly made the Qur’ān easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?

54:23

Thamūd denied the warning.

54:24

And said, "Is it one human being1 among us that we should follow? Indeed, we would then be in error and madness.

1 translator’s note
  1. i.e., the prophet Ṣāliḥ. ↩

54:25

Has the message been sent down upon him from among us? Rather, he is an insolent liar."

54:26

They will know tomorrow who is the insolent liar.

54:27

Indeed, We are sending the she-camel as trial for them, so watch them and be patient.1
