يُعۡرَفُ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ بِسِيمَٰهُمۡ فَيُؤۡخَذُ بِٱلنَّوَٰصِي وَٱلۡأَقۡدَامِ ٤١
The criminals will be known by their marks, and they will be seized by the forelocks and the feet.

Commentary on 55:40–41
﴿فَبِأيِّ: آلاءِ رَبِّكُما تُكَذِّبانِ﴾ مَعَ كَثْرَةِ مَنافِعِها فَإنَّ الإخْبارَ بِما ذُكِرَ مِمّا يَزْجُرُكم عَنِ (p-183)الشَّرِّ المُؤَدِّي إلَيْهِ، وأمّا ما قِيلَ: مِمّا أنْعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلى عِبادِهِ المُؤْمِنِينَ في هَذا اليَوْمِ؟ فَلا تَعَلُّقَ لَهُ بِالمَقامِ.
وَقَوْلُهُ تَعالى: ﴿يُعْرَفُ المُجْرِمُونَ بِسِيماهُمْ﴾ اسْتِئْنافٌ يَجْرِي مَجْرى التَّعْلِيلِ لِعَدَمِ السُّؤالِ قِيلَ: يُعْرَفُونَ بِسَوادِ الوُجُوهِ وزُرْقَةِ العُيُونِ، وقِيلَ: بِما يَعْلُوهم مِنَ الكَآبَةِ والحُزْنِ.
﴿فَيُؤْخَذُ بِالنَّواصِي والأقْدامِ﴾ الجارُّ والمَجْرُورُ هو القائِمُ مَقامَ الفاعِلِ يُقالُ: أخَذَهُ إذا كانَ المَأْخُوذُ مَقْصُودًا بِالأخْذِ، ومِنهُ قَوْلُهُ تَعالى: ﴿خُذُوا حِذْرَكُمْ﴾ ونَحْوُهُ وأخَذَ بِهِ إذا كانَ المَأْخُوذُ شَيْئًا مِنَ مُلابَساتِ المَقْصُودِ بِالأخْذِ ومِنهُ قَوْلُهُ تَعالى: ﴿لا تَأْخُذْ بِلِحْيَتِي ولا بِرَأْسِي﴾ وقَوْلُ المُسْتَغِيثِ: خُذْ بِيَدِي أخَذَ اللَّهُ بِيَدِكَ أيْ: يُجْمَعُ بَيْنَ نَواصِيهِمْ وأقْدامِهِمْ في سِلْسِلَةٍ مِن وراءِ ظُهُورِهِمْ، وقِيلَ: تَسْحَبُهُمُ المَلائِكَةُ تارَةً تَأْخُذُ بِالنَّواصِي وتارَةً تَأْخُذُ بِالأقْدامِ.

يُعۡرَفُ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ بِسِيمَٰهُمۡ فَيُؤۡخَذُ بِٱلنَّوَٰصِي وَٱلۡأَقۡدَامِ ٤١

55:42
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٤٢
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
55:43
هَٰذِهِۦ جَهَنَّمُ ٱلَّتِي يُكَذِّبُ بِهَا ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ ٤٣
This is Hell, which the criminals deny.
55:44
يَطُوفُونَ بَيۡنَهَا وَبَيۡنَ حَمِيمٍ ءَانٖ ٤٤
They will circulate between it and scalding water, heated [to the utmost degree].
55:45
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٤٥
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
55:46
وَلِمَنۡ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِۦ جَنَّتَانِ ٤٦
But for he who has feared the position of his Lord1 are two gardens -

فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٤٧
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -
55:48
ذَوَاتَآ أَفۡنَانٖ ٤٨
Having [spreading] branches.
55:49
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٤٩
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
55:50
فِيهِمَا عَيۡنَانِ تَجۡرِيَانِ ٥٠
In both of them are two springs, flowing.
55:51
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٥١
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
55:52
فِيهِمَا مِن كُلِّ فَٰكِهَةٖ زَوۡجَانِ ٥٢
In both of them are of every fruit, two kinds.
55:53
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٥٣
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
55:54
مُتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَىٰ فُرُشِۭ بَطَآئِنُهَا مِنۡ إِسۡتَبۡرَقٖۚ وَجَنَى ٱلۡجَنَّتَيۡنِ دَانٖ ٥٤
[They are] reclining on beds whose linings are of silk brocade, and the fruit of the two gardens is hanging low.
55:55
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٥٥
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
55:56
فِيهِنَّ قَٰصِرَٰتُ ٱلطَّرۡفِ لَمۡ يَطۡمِثۡهُنَّ إِنسٞ قَبۡلَهُمۡ وَلَا جَآنّٞ ٥٦
In them are women limiting [their] glances,1 untouched2 before them by man or jinnī -
55:57
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٥٧
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -
55:58
كَأَنَّهُنَّ ٱلۡيَاقُوتُ وَٱلۡمَرۡجَانُ ٥٨
As if they were rubies and coral.1

فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٥٩
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
55:60
هَلۡ جَزَآءُ ٱلۡإِحۡسَٰنِ إِلَّا ٱلۡإِحۡسَٰنُ ٦٠
Is the reward for good [anything] but good?
55:61
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٦١
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
55:62
وَمِن دُونِهِمَا جَنَّتَانِ ٦٢
And below them both [in excellence] are two [other] gardens -
55:63
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٦٣
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -
55:64
مُدۡهَآمَّتَانِ ٦٤
Dark green [in color].
55:65
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٦٥
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
55:66
فِيهِمَا عَيۡنَانِ نَضَّاخَتَانِ ٦٦
In both of them are two springs, spouting.
55:67
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٦٧
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
