حُورٞ مَّقۡصُورَٰتٞ فِي ٱلۡخِيَامِ ٧٢
Fair ones reserved in pavilions -

Commentary on 55:72
ومَقْصورات، أي: مَحْبوسات، ومنه «القَصْر» لأنه يَحْبِسُ مَنْ فيه، ومنه قولُ النحاة «المقصور» لأنه حُبِس عن المدِّ أو حُبس عن الإِعراب، أو حُبِس الإِعرابُ فيه، والنساء تُمْدَحُ بملازَمَتِهِنَّ البيوتَ كما قال [أبو] قيس بن الأسلت:
4195 - وتَكْسَلُ عن جيرانِها فيَزُرْنَها ... وتَعْتَلُّ عن إتْيانِهِنَّ فتُعْذَرُ
ويقال: امرأةٌ مَقْصورة وقَصيرة وقَصورة، بمعنىً واحد. قال كثير عزة:
4196 - وأنتِ التي حَبَّبْتِ كلَّ قصيرةٍ ... إليَّ ولم تَعْلَمْ بذاك القَصائرُ
عَنَيْتُ قصيراتِ الحِجالِ ولم أُرِدْ ... قِصارَ الخُطا شَرُّ النساءِ البَحاتِرُ
والخِيام: جمعُ خَيْمة وهي تكونُ مِنْ نَمَّام وسائرِ الحَشيش، فإنْ كانَتْ مِنْ شَعْرٍ فلا يُقال لها: خَيْمةٌ بل بَيْتٌ. وقال جرير:
4197 - متى كان الخيامُ بذي طُلوحٍ ... سُقِيْتِ الغَيْثَ أيتها الخيامُ

55:68
فِيهِمَا فَٰكِهَةٞ وَنَخۡلٞ وَرُمَّانٞ ٦٨
In both of them are fruit and palm trees and pomegranates.
55:69
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٦٩
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
55:70
فِيهِنَّ خَيۡرَٰتٌ حِسَانٞ ٧٠
In them are good and beautiful women -
55:71
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٧١
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -
55:72
حُورٞ مَّقۡصُورَٰتٞ فِي ٱلۡخِيَامِ ٧٢
Fair ones reserved in pavilions -
55:73
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٧٣
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -
55:74
لَمۡ يَطۡمِثۡهُنَّ إِنسٞ قَبۡلَهُمۡ وَلَا جَآنّٞ ٧٤
Untouched before them by man or jinnī -
55:75
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٧٥
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -
55:76
مُتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَىٰ رَفۡرَفٍ خُضۡرٖ وَعَبۡقَرِيٍّ حِسَانٖ ٧٦
Reclining on green cushions and beautiful fine carpets.
55:77
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٧٧
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
55:78
تَبَٰرَكَ ٱسۡمُ رَبِّكَ ذِي ٱلۡجَلَٰلِ وَٱلۡإِكۡرَامِ ٧٨
Blessed is the name of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor.
سورة الواقعة
Al-Waqi'ah
The Inevitable · Meccan · 96 ayahs
بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
56:1
إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلۡوَاقِعَةُ ١
When the Occurrence occurs,
56:2
لَيۡسَ لِوَقۡعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ ٢
There is, at its occurrence, no denial.
56:3
خَافِضَةٞ رَّافِعَةٌ ٣
It will bring down [some] and raise up [others].1

56:4
إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ رَجّٗا ٤
When the earth is shaken with convulsion
56:5
وَبُسَّتِ ٱلۡجِبَالُ بَسّٗا ٥
And the mountains are broken down, crumbling
56:6
فَكَانَتۡ هَبَآءٗ مُّنۢبَثّٗا ٦
And become dust dispersing,
56:7
وَكُنتُمۡ أَزۡوَٰجٗا ثَلَٰثَةٗ ٧
And you become [of] three kinds:
56:8
فَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ ٨
Then the companions of the right - what are the companions of the right?1

56:9
وَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ ٩
And the companions of the left - what are companions of the left?1

- i.e., those given their records in their left hand and who are destined for Hell. ↩
56:10
وَٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ ١٠
And the forerunners, the forerunners1 -

- The words can also be understood as a complete sentence, i.e., "The forerunners [in good deeds] are the forerunners [in entering Paradise]." ↩
56:11
أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبُونَ ١١
Those are the ones brought near [to Allāh]
56:12
فِي جَنَّٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ ١٢
In the Gardens of Pleasure,
56:13
ثُلَّةٞ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ ١٣
A [large] company of the former peoples
56:14
وَقَلِيلٞ مِّنَ ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ ١٤
And a few of the later peoples,
56:15
عَلَىٰ سُرُرٖ مَّوۡضُونَةٖ ١٥
On thrones woven [with ornament],
56:16
مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيۡهَا مُتَقَٰبِلِينَ ١٦
Reclining on them, facing each other.
