Commentary on 56:15–17
The reward of As-Sabiqun
عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مَّوْضُونَةٍ ([ They will be sitting ] on thrones woven with gold...56:15) The word مَّوْضُونَةٍ mawdunah, according to Ibn ` Abbas ؓ ، as recorded by Ibn Jarir, Ibn Abi Hatim, Baihaqi and others, means 'fabric woven or inwrought with gold thread'.
وِلْدَانٌ مُّخَلَّدُونَ (...by Immortal boys...56:17) meaning that the boys will never grow up, get old or change in shape. The preferred opinion is that the youths of Paradise, like the fair damsels of Paradise, will have been born in Paradise. They will be the servants of the inmates of Paradise. Hadith narratives indicate that there will be thousands of such servants for each of the inmates of Paradise.

55:68
فِيهِمَا فَٰكِهَةٞ وَنَخۡلٞ وَرُمَّانٞ ٦٨
In both of them are fruit and palm trees and pomegranates.
55:69
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٦٩
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
55:70
فِيهِنَّ خَيۡرَٰتٌ حِسَانٞ ٧٠
In them are good and beautiful women -
55:71
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٧١
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -
55:72
حُورٞ مَّقۡصُورَٰتٞ فِي ٱلۡخِيَامِ ٧٢
Fair ones reserved in pavilions -
55:73
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٧٣
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -
55:74
لَمۡ يَطۡمِثۡهُنَّ إِنسٞ قَبۡلَهُمۡ وَلَا جَآنّٞ ٧٤
Untouched before them by man or jinnī -
55:75
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٧٥
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -
55:76
مُتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَىٰ رَفۡرَفٍ خُضۡرٖ وَعَبۡقَرِيٍّ حِسَانٖ ٧٦
Reclining on green cushions and beautiful fine carpets.
55:77
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٧٧
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
55:78
تَبَٰرَكَ ٱسۡمُ رَبِّكَ ذِي ٱلۡجَلَٰلِ وَٱلۡإِكۡرَامِ ٧٨
Blessed is the name of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor.
سورة الواقعة
Al-Waqi'ah

بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
56:1
إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلۡوَاقِعَةُ ١
When the Occurrence occurs,
56:2
لَيۡسَ لِوَقۡعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ ٢
There is, at its occurrence, no denial.
56:3
خَافِضَةٞ رَّافِعَةٌ ٣
It will bring down [some] and raise up [others].1

56:4
إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ رَجّٗا ٤
When the earth is shaken with convulsion
56:5
وَبُسَّتِ ٱلۡجِبَالُ بَسّٗا ٥
And the mountains are broken down, crumbling
56:6
فَكَانَتۡ هَبَآءٗ مُّنۢبَثّٗا ٦
And become dust dispersing,
56:7
وَكُنتُمۡ أَزۡوَٰجٗا ثَلَٰثَةٗ ٧
And you become [of] three kinds:
56:8
فَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ ٨
Then the companions of the right - what are the companions of the right?1

56:9
وَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ ٩
And the companions of the left - what are companions of the left?1

56:10
وَٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ ١٠
And the forerunners, the forerunners1 -

- The words can also be understood as a complete sentence, i.e., "The forerunners [in good deeds] are the forerunners [in entering Paradise]." ↩
56:11
أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبُونَ ١١
Those are the ones brought near [to Allāh]
56:12
فِي جَنَّٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ ١٢
In the Gardens of Pleasure,
56:13
ثُلَّةٞ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ ١٣
A [large] company of the former peoples
56:14
وَقَلِيلٞ مِّنَ ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ ١٤
And a few of the later peoples,
56:15
عَلَىٰ سُرُرٖ مَّوۡضُونَةٖ ١٥
On thrones woven [with ornament],
56:16
مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيۡهَا مُتَقَٰبِلِينَ ١٦
Reclining on them, facing each other.
