فَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ ٨
Then the companions of the right - what are the companions of the right?1

Commentary on 56:8–9
وَقَوْلُهُ تَعالى: ﴿فَأصْحابُ المَيْمَنَةِ ما أصْحابُ المَيْمَنَةِ﴾ ﴿وَأصْحابُ المَشْأمَةِ ما أصْحابُ المَشْأمَةِ﴾ تَقْسِيمٌ وتَنْوِيعٌ لِلْأزْواجِ الثَّلاثَةِ مَعَ الإشارَةِ الإجْمالِيَّةِ إلى أحْوالِهِمْ قَبْلَ تَفْصِيلِها فَقَوْلُهُ تَعالى: ﴿فَأصْحابُ المَيْمَنَةِ﴾ مُبْتَدَأٌ وقَوْلُهُ: ﴿ما أصْحابُ المَيْمَنَةِ﴾ خَبَرُهُ عَلى أنَّ "ما" الِاسْتِفْهامِيَّةَ مُبْتَدَأٌ ثانٍ ما بَعْدَهُ خَبَرُهُ والجُمْلَةُ خَبَرُ الأوَّلِ والأصْلُ ما هُمْ؟ أيْ: أيُّ شَيْءٍ هم في حالِهِمْ وصِفَتِهِمْ؟ فَإنَّ "ما" وإنْ شاعَتْ في طَلَبِ مَفْهُومِ الِاسْمِ والحَقِيقَةِ لَكِنَّها قَدْ يُطْلَبُ بَها الصِّفَةُ والحالُ تَقُولُ: ما زَيْدٌ؟ فَيُقالُ: عالِمٌ أوْ طَبِيبٌ، فَوَضْعُ الظّاهِرِ مَوْضِعَ الضَّمِيرِ لِكَوْنِهِ أدْخَلَ في التَّفْخِيمِ وكَذا الكَلامُ في قَوْلِهِ تَعالى: ﴿وَأصْحابُ المَشْأمَةِ ما أصْحابُ المَشْأمَةِ﴾ والمُرادُ: تَعْجِيبُ السّامِعِ مِن شَأْنِ الفَرِيقَيْنِ في الفَخامَةِ والفَظاعَةِ كَأنَّهُ قِيلَ: فَأصْحابُ المَيْمَنَةِ في غايَةِ حُسْنِ الحالِ وأصْحابُ المَشْأمَةِ في نِهايَةِ سُوءِ الحالِ وتَكَلَّمُوا في الفَرِيقَيْنِ فَقِيلَ: أصْحابُ المَيْمَنَةِ أصْحابُ المَنزِلَةِ السَّنِيَّةِ وأصْحابُ المَشْأمَةِ أصْحابُ المَنزِلَةِ الدَّنِيَّةِ أخْذًا مِن تَيَمُّنِهِمْ بِالمَيامِنِ وتَشاؤُمِهِمْ بِالشَّمائِلِ، وقِيلَ: الَّذِينَ يُؤْتَوْنَ صَحائِفَهم بِأيْمانِهِمْ والَّذِينَ يُؤْتَوْنَها بِشَمائِلِهِمْ، وقِيلَ: الَّذِينَ يُؤْخَذُ بِهِمْ ذاتَ اليَمِينِ إلى الجَنَّةِ والَّذِينَ يُؤْخَذُ بِهِمْ ذاتَ الشِّمالِ إلى النّارِ، وقِيلَ: أصْحابُ اليَمِينِ وأصْحابُ الشُّؤْمِ فَإنَّ السُّعَداءَ مَيامِينُ عَلى أنْفُسِهِمْ بِطاعَتِهِمْ والأشْقِياءُ مَشائِيمُ عَلَيْها بِمَعاصِيهِمْ.

55:68
فِيهِمَا فَٰكِهَةٞ وَنَخۡلٞ وَرُمَّانٞ ٦٨
In both of them are fruit and palm trees and pomegranates.
55:69
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٦٩
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
55:70
فِيهِنَّ خَيۡرَٰتٌ حِسَانٞ ٧٠
In them are good and beautiful women -
55:71
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٧١
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -
55:72
حُورٞ مَّقۡصُورَٰتٞ فِي ٱلۡخِيَامِ ٧٢
Fair ones reserved in pavilions -
55:73
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٧٣
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -
55:74
لَمۡ يَطۡمِثۡهُنَّ إِنسٞ قَبۡلَهُمۡ وَلَا جَآنّٞ ٧٤
Untouched before them by man or jinnī -
55:75
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٧٥
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -
55:76
مُتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَىٰ رَفۡرَفٍ خُضۡرٖ وَعَبۡقَرِيٍّ حِسَانٖ ٧٦
Reclining on green cushions and beautiful fine carpets.
55:77
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ٧٧
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
55:78
تَبَٰرَكَ ٱسۡمُ رَبِّكَ ذِي ٱلۡجَلَٰلِ وَٱلۡإِكۡرَامِ ٧٨
Blessed is the name of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor.
سورة الواقعة
Al-Waqi'ah

بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
56:1
إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلۡوَاقِعَةُ ١
When the Occurrence occurs,
56:2
لَيۡسَ لِوَقۡعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ ٢
There is, at its occurrence, no denial.
56:3
خَافِضَةٞ رَّافِعَةٌ ٣
It will bring down [some] and raise up [others].1

56:4
إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ رَجّٗا ٤
When the earth is shaken with convulsion
56:5
وَبُسَّتِ ٱلۡجِبَالُ بَسّٗا ٥
And the mountains are broken down, crumbling
56:6
فَكَانَتۡ هَبَآءٗ مُّنۢبَثّٗا ٦
And become dust dispersing,
56:7
وَكُنتُمۡ أَزۡوَٰجٗا ثَلَٰثَةٗ ٧
And you become [of] three kinds:
56:8
فَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ ٨
Then the companions of the right - what are the companions of the right?1

وَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ ٩
And the companions of the left - what are companions of the left?1

56:10
وَٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ ١٠
And the forerunners, the forerunners1 -

- The words can also be understood as a complete sentence, i.e., "The forerunners [in good deeds] are the forerunners [in entering Paradise]." ↩
56:11
أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبُونَ ١١
Those are the ones brought near [to Allāh]
56:12
فِي جَنَّٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ ١٢
In the Gardens of Pleasure,
56:13
ثُلَّةٞ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ ١٣
A [large] company of the former peoples
56:14
وَقَلِيلٞ مِّنَ ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ ١٤
And a few of the later peoples,
56:15
عَلَىٰ سُرُرٖ مَّوۡضُونَةٖ ١٥
On thrones woven [with ornament],
56:16
مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيۡهَا مُتَقَٰبِلِينَ ١٦
Reclining on them, facing each other.
