Commentary on 67:1–4

A study of the present world reveals a certain contradiction. The whole universe (except for human beings) is running quite perfectly and in the most well-organised manner. It has no defect in it anywhere. On the contrary, one finds many defects in human life. This is because the nature of man’s creation is different. Man in this world is living under testing conditions. A test essentially demands freedom of action. This freedom of action has given the opportunity to human beings to create disturbance and imbalance in the world. The transgression rampant in the human world is the price of human freedom. If such conditions did not exist, how could divine approval be given to those worthy persons who did not transgress, in spite of having opportunities to transgress and who abstained from arrogance in spite of having the power to be arrogant?

Al-Mulk

The Sovereignty · Meccan · 30 ayahs

Blessed is He in whose hand is dominion, and He is over all things competent -

67:2

[He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed - and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving -

67:3

[And] who created seven heavens in layers.1 You do not see in the creation of the Most Merciful any inconsistency. So return [your] vision [to the sky]; do you see any breaks?

1 translator’s note
  1. i.e., one covering or fitting over the other. ↩

67:4

Then return [your] vision twice again.1 [Your] vision will return to you humbled while it is fatigued.

1 translator’s note
  1. i.e., repeatedly. ↩

67:5

And We have certainly beautified the nearest heaven with lamps [i.e., stars] and have made [from] them what is thrown at the devils1 and have prepared for them the punishment of the Blaze.

1 translator’s note
  1. Thereby driving them from the heavens and preventing them from eavesdropping. See 72:8-9. ↩

67:6

And for those who disbelieved in their Lord is the punishment of Hell, and wretched is the destination.

67:7

When they are thrown into it, they hear from it a [dreadful] inhaling while it boils up.

67:8

It almost bursts with rage. Every time a company is thrown into it, its keepers ask them, "Did there not come to you a warner?"

67:9

They will say, "Yes, a warner had come to us, but we denied and said, 'Allāh has not sent down anything. You are not but in great error.'"

67:10

And they will say, "If only we had been listening or reasoning, we would not be among the companions of the Blaze."

67:11

And they will admit their sin, so [it is] alienation1 for the companions of the Blaze.

1 translator’s note
  1. From all good and from Allāh's mercy. ↩

67:12

Indeed, those who fear their Lord unseen will have forgiveness and great reward.
