ثُمَّ فِي سِلۡسِلَةٖ ذَرۡعُهَا سَبۡعُونَ ذِرَاعٗا فَٱسۡلُكُوهُ ٣٢
Then into a chain whose length is seventy cubits insert him."

Commentary on 69:32
قوله: {ذَرْعُهَا سَبْعُونَ} : في محلِّ جر صفةً ل «سِلْسِلَةٍ» و «في سِلْسِلَة» متعلِّقٌ ب «اسْلُكوه» والفاءُ لا تَمْنع من ذلك. والذِّراعُ مؤنثٌ، ولذلك يُجْمَعُ على أفْعُل وسَقَطَتْ التاءُ مِنْ عددِه قال:
432 - 2- أَرْمي عليها وهي فَرْعٌ أَجْمَعُ ... وهي ثلاثُ أَذْرُعٍ وإصبعُ
وزعم بعضُم أنَّ في قولِه: «في سِلْسلة» «فاسلكوه» قلباً، قال: لأنه نُقِلَ في التفسير أنَّ السِّلسلةَ تَدْخُل مِنْ فيه، وتخرجُ مِنْ دُبُرِه، فهي المَسْلُوْكة فيه، لا هو مَسْلوكٌ فيها. والظاهرُ أنه لا يُحتاج إلى ذلك لأنه رُوي أنَّها لطولِها تُجْعَلُ في عنقِه وتَلتَوي عليه، حتى تُحيطَ به مِنْ جميعِ جهاتِه، فهو المَسْلوكُ فيها لإِحاطتِها به.
وقال الزمخشري: «والمعنى في تقديم السِّلسلةِ على السَّلْك مثلُه في تقديمِ الجحيمِ على التَّصْليةِ أي: لا تَسْلُكوه إلاَّ في هذه السلسلةِ و» ثُمَّ «للدلالةِ على التفاوُتِ لِما بين الغَلِّ والتَّصْليةِ بالجَحيم، وما قبلَها، وبينَ السَّلْكِ في السِّلسلة لا على تراخي المُدَّة» . ونازعه الشيخُ في إفادةِ التقديم الاختصاصَ كعادتِه، وجوابُه ما تقدَّم، ونازَعه أيضاً في أنَّ «ثُمَّ» للدلالة على تراخي الرتبة. وقال: «يمكنُ التراخي الزماني: بأَنْ يَصْلَى بعد أن يُسْلَكَ، ويُسْلَكَ بعد أَنْ يُؤْخَذَ ويُغَلَّ بمهلةٍ بين هذه الأشياءِ» . انتهى. وفيه نظرٌ: من حيث إن التوعُّدَ بتوالي العذابِ آكَدُ وأقطعُ مِنْ التوعُّدِ بتَفْريقه.

69:9
وَجَآءَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ وَمَن قَبۡلَهُۥ وَٱلۡمُؤۡتَفِكَٰتُ بِٱلۡخَاطِئَةِ ٩
And there came Pharaoh and those before him and the overturned cities1 with sin.

69:10
فَعَصَوۡاْ رَسُولَ رَبِّهِمۡ فَأَخَذَهُمۡ أَخۡذَةٗ رَّابِيَةً ١٠
And they disobeyed the messenger of their Lord, so He seized them with a seizure exceeding [in severity].
69:11
إِنَّا لَمَّا طَغَا ٱلۡمَآءُ حَمَلۡنَٰكُمۡ فِي ٱلۡجَارِيَةِ ١١
Indeed, when the water overflowed, We carried you [i.e., your ancestors] in the sailing ship1

69:12
لِنَجۡعَلَهَا لَكُمۡ تَذۡكِرَةٗ وَتَعِيَهَآ أُذُنٞ وَٰعِيَةٞ ١٢
That We might make it for you a reminder and [that] a conscious ear would be conscious of it.
69:13
فَإِذَا نُفِخَ فِي ٱلصُّورِ نَفۡخَةٞ وَٰحِدَةٞ ١٣
Then when the Horn is blown with one blast
69:14
وَحُمِلَتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ وَٱلۡجِبَالُ فَدُكَّتَا دَكَّةٗ وَٰحِدَةٗ ١٤
And the earth and the mountains are lifted and leveled with one blow [i.e., stroke] -
69:15
فَيَوۡمَئِذٖ وَقَعَتِ ٱلۡوَاقِعَةُ ١٥
Then on that Day, the Occurrence [i.e., Resurrection] will occur,
69:16
وَٱنشَقَّتِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ فَهِيَ يَوۡمَئِذٖ وَاهِيَةٞ ١٦
And the heaven will split [open], for that Day it is infirm.1

69:17
وَٱلۡمَلَكُ عَلَىٰٓ أَرۡجَآئِهَاۚ وَيَحۡمِلُ عَرۡشَ رَبِّكَ فَوۡقَهُمۡ يَوۡمَئِذٖ ثَمَٰنِيَةٞ ١٧
And the angels are at its edges. And there will bear the Throne of your Lord above them, that Day, eight [of them].
69:18
يَوۡمَئِذٖ تُعۡرَضُونَ لَا تَخۡفَىٰ مِنكُمۡ خَافِيَةٞ ١٨
That Day, you will be exhibited [for judgement]; not hidden among you is anything concealed.1

69:19
فَأَمَّا مَنۡ أُوتِيَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ بِيَمِينِهِۦ فَيَقُولُ هَآؤُمُ ٱقۡرَءُواْ كِتَٰبِيَهۡ ١٩
So as for he who is given his record in his right hand, he will say, "Here, read my record!
69:20
إِنِّي ظَنَنتُ أَنِّي مُلَٰقٍ حِسَابِيَهۡ ٢٠
Indeed, I was certain that I would be meeting my account."
69:21
فَهُوَ فِي عِيشَةٖ رَّاضِيَةٖ ٢١
So he will be in a pleasant life -
69:22
فِي جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٖ ٢٢
In an elevated garden,
69:23
قُطُوفُهَا دَانِيَةٞ ٢٣
Its [fruit] to be picked hanging near.
69:24
كُلُواْ وَٱشۡرَبُواْ هَنِيٓـَٔۢا بِمَآ أَسۡلَفۡتُمۡ فِي ٱلۡأَيَّامِ ٱلۡخَالِيَةِ ٢٤
[They will be told], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you put forth1 in the days past."

69:25
وَأَمَّا مَنۡ أُوتِيَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ بِشِمَالِهِۦ فَيَقُولُ يَٰلَيۡتَنِي لَمۡ أُوتَ كِتَٰبِيَهۡ ٢٥
But as for he who is given his record in his left hand, he will say, "Oh, I wish I had not been given my record
69:26
وَلَمۡ أَدۡرِ مَا حِسَابِيَهۡ ٢٦
And had not known what is my account.
69:27
يَٰلَيۡتَهَا كَانَتِ ٱلۡقَاضِيَةَ ٢٧
I wish it [i.e., my death] had been the decisive one.1

69:28
مَآ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنِّي مَالِيَهۡۜ ٢٨
My wealth has not availed me.
69:29
هَلَكَ عَنِّي سُلۡطَٰنِيَهۡ ٢٩
Gone from me is my authority."1

69:30
خُذُوهُ فَغُلُّوهُ ٣٠
[Allāh will say], "Seize him and shackle him.
69:31
ثُمَّ ٱلۡجَحِيمَ صَلُّوهُ ٣١
Then into Hellfire drive him.
69:32
ثُمَّ فِي سِلۡسِلَةٖ ذَرۡعُهَا سَبۡعُونَ ذِرَاعٗا فَٱسۡلُكُوهُ ٣٢
Then into a chain whose length is seventy cubits insert him."
69:33
إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لَا يُؤۡمِنُ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ ٣٣
Indeed, he did not used to believe in Allāh, the Most Great,
69:34
وَلَا يَحُضُّ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلۡمِسۡكِينِ ٣٤
Nor did he encourage the feeding of the poor.
