وَكَم مِّن قَرۡيَةٍ أَهۡلَكۡنَٰهَا فَجَآءَهَا بَأۡسُنَا بَيَٰتًا أَوۡ هُمۡ قَآئِلُونَ ٤
And how many cities have We destroyed, and Our punishment came to them at night or while they were sleeping at noon.

Commentary on 7:4
﴿وَكَم مِّن قَرۡیَةٍ أَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهَا فَجَاۤءَهَا بَأۡسُنَا بَیَـٰتًا أَوۡ هُمۡ قَاۤىِٕلُونَ ٤﴾ - تفسير
٢٧٠٧٦- قال مقاتل بن سليمان: وعَظَهم، فقال: ﴿وكم من قرية أهلكناها﴾ بالعذاب، ﴿فجاءها بأسنا بياتا﴾ وهم نائمون، يعني: ليلًا، ﴿أو﴾ جاءهم العذاب [و]﴿هم قائلون﴾ يعني: بالنهار[[تفسير مقاتل بن سليمان ٢/٢٩.]]٢٤٦٠. (ز)
٢٤٦٠ نقل ابن عطية (٣/٥١١) في معنى: ﴿وكَمْ مِن قَرْيَةٍ أهْلَكْناها﴾ قولين: الأول: أن «المراد: وكم من أهل قرية، وحُذِف المضاف، وأُقِيم المضاف إليه مقام المضاف». الثاني: «إنما عبر بالقرية لأنها أعظم في العقوبة؛ إذ أهلك البشر وقريتهم، وقد بيَّن في آخر الآية بقوله سبحانه: ﴿أوْ هُمْ﴾ أنّ البشر داخلون في الهلاك». ثم وجَّهه بقوله: «فالآية -على هذا التأويل- تتضمن هلاكَ القرية وأهلَها جميعًا، وعلى التأويل الأول تتضمن هلاك الأهل».
﴿وَكَم مِّن قَرۡیَةٍ أَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهَا فَجَاۤءَهَا بَأۡسُنَا بَیَـٰتًا أَوۡ هُمۡ قَاۤىِٕلُونَ ٤﴾ - آثار متعلقة بالآية
٢٧٠٧٧- قال مالك بن دينار: قالت ابنة الربيع لأبيها: يا أبتاه، مالي أرى الناس ينامون ولا أراك تنام؟ قال: إنِّي أخاف البَيات[[أخرجه ابن أبي حاتم ٥/١٤٣٨.]]. (ز)

7:2
كِتَٰبٌ أُنزِلَ إِلَيۡكَ فَلَا يَكُن فِي صَدۡرِكَ حَرَجٞ مِّنۡهُ لِتُنذِرَ بِهِۦ وَذِكۡرَىٰ لِلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ ٢
[This is] a Book revealed to you, [O Muḥammad] - so let there not be in your breast distress therefrom - that you may warn thereby and as a reminder to the believers.
7:3
ٱتَّبِعُواْ مَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيۡكُم مِّن رَّبِّكُمۡ وَلَا تَتَّبِعُواْ مِن دُونِهِۦٓ أَوۡلِيَآءَۗ قَلِيلٗا مَّا تَذَكَّرُونَ ٣
Follow, [O mankind], what has been revealed to you from your Lord and do not follow other than Him any allies. Little do you remember.
7:4
وَكَم مِّن قَرۡيَةٍ أَهۡلَكۡنَٰهَا فَجَآءَهَا بَأۡسُنَا بَيَٰتًا أَوۡ هُمۡ قَآئِلُونَ ٤
And how many cities have We destroyed, and Our punishment came to them at night or while they were sleeping at noon.
7:5
فَمَا كَانَ دَعۡوَىٰهُمۡ إِذۡ جَآءَهُم بَأۡسُنَآ إِلَّآ أَن قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَٰلِمِينَ ٥
And their declaration when Our punishment came to them was only that they said, "Indeed, we were wrongdoers!"
7:6
فَلَنَسۡـَٔلَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ أُرۡسِلَ إِلَيۡهِمۡ وَلَنَسۡـَٔلَنَّ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ ٦
Then We will surely question those to whom [a message] was sent, and We will surely question the messengers.
7:7
فَلَنَقُصَّنَّ عَلَيۡهِم بِعِلۡمٖۖ وَمَا كُنَّا غَآئِبِينَ ٧
Then We will surely relate [their deeds] to them with knowledge, and We were not [at all] absent.
7:8
وَٱلۡوَزۡنُ يَوۡمَئِذٍ ٱلۡحَقُّۚ فَمَن ثَقُلَتۡ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ فَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡلِحُونَ ٨
And the weighing [of deeds] that Day will be the truth. So those whose scales are heavy - it is they who will be the successful.
7:9
وَمَنۡ خَفَّتۡ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ فَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ خَسِرُوٓاْ أَنفُسَهُم بِمَا كَانُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا يَظۡلِمُونَ ٩
And those whose scales are light - they are the ones who will lose themselves for what injustice they were doing toward Our verses.
7:10
وَلَقَدۡ مَكَّنَّٰكُمۡ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَجَعَلۡنَا لَكُمۡ فِيهَا مَعَٰيِشَۗ قَلِيلٗا مَّا تَشۡكُرُونَ ١٠
And We have certainly established you upon the earth and made for you therein ways of livelihood. Little are you grateful.
7:11
وَلَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَٰكُمۡ ثُمَّ صَوَّرۡنَٰكُمۡ ثُمَّ قُلۡنَا لِلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ ٱسۡجُدُواْ لِأٓدَمَ فَسَجَدُوٓاْ إِلَّآ إِبۡلِيسَ لَمۡ يَكُن مِّنَ ٱلسَّٰجِدِينَ ١١
And We have certainly created you, [O mankind], and given you [human] form. Then We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam"; so they prostrated, except for Iblees.1 He was not of those who prostrated.
