Commentary on 77:16–28
The Call to contemplate the various Manifestations of Allah's Power
Allah says,
أَلَمْ نُهْلِكِ الاٌّوَّلِينَ
(Did We not destroy the ancients?) meaning, those who rejected the Messengers and opposed what they came to them with.
ثُمَّ نُتْبِعُهُمُ ٱلَْٔاخِرِينَ
(So shall We make later generations to follow them), meaning, from those who are similar to them. Thus, Allah says,
كَذَلِكَ نَفْعَلُ بِالْمُجْرِمِينَ وَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
(Thus do We deal with the criminals. Woe that Day to the deniers!) Ibn Jarir said this. Then Allah reminds His creatures of His favor, and using the beginning of creation to support the idea of repeating it, He says:
أَلَمْ نَخْلُقكُّم مِّن مَّآءٍ مَّهِينٍ
(Did We not create you from a despised water?) meaning, weak and despised in comparison to the power of the Creator. This is similar to what has been reported in the Hadith of Busr bin Jahhash (that Allah says),
«ابْنَ آدَمَ أَنْى تُعْجِزُنِي وَقَدْ خَلَقْتُكَ مِنْ مِثْلِ هَذِهِ؟»
("(O) Son of Adam! How can you think that I am unable, and yet I created you from something like this (i.e., semen)")
فَجَعَلْنَهُ فِى قَرَارٍ مَّكِينٍ
(Then We placed it in a place of safety,) meaning, We gathered him in the womb, where the fluid of the man and the woman settles. The womb has been prepared for this, as a protector of the fluid deposited in it. Allah said:
إِلَى قَدَرٍ مَّعْلُومٍ
(For a known period) meaning for a fixed period of time, which is from six months to nine months. Thus, Allah says,
فَقَدَرْنَا فَنِعْمَ الْقَدِرُونَ وَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
(So We did measure, and We are the best to measure. Woe that Day to the deniers!) Then Allah says,
أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ الاٌّرْضَ كِفَاتاً - أَحْيَآءً وَأَمْوتاً
(Have We not made the earth Kifat for the living and the dead) Ibn `Abbas said, "Kifat means a place of shelter." Mujahid said, "It holds the dead so that nothing is seen of it." Ash-Sha`bi said, "Its interior is for your dead, and its surface is for your living." Mujahid and Qatadah also said this.
وَجَعَلْنَا فِيهَا رَوَاسِىَ شَمِخَتٍ
(And have placed therein fixed towers), meaning the mountains. The earth is held in place with them so that it does not shake and sway.
وَأَسْقَيْنَكُم مَّآءً فُرَاتاً
(and have given you Furat water), meaning cold and delicious water from the clouds or from what He causes to gush forth from the springs of the earth.
وَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
(Woe that Day to the deniers!), meaning woe to whoever reflects upon these created things, which demonstrate the greatness of their Creator, and then after that continues to reject Him and disbelieve in Him.

77:20
أَلَمۡ نَخۡلُقكُّم مِّن مَّآءٖ مَّهِينٖ ٢٠
Did We not create you from a liquid disdained?
77:21
فَجَعَلۡنَٰهُ فِي قَرَارٖ مَّكِينٍ ٢١
And We placed it in a firm lodging [i.e., the womb]
77:22
إِلَىٰ قَدَرٖ مَّعۡلُومٖ ٢٢
For a known extent.
77:23
فَقَدَرۡنَا فَنِعۡمَ ٱلۡقَٰدِرُونَ ٢٣
And We determined [it], and excellent [are We] to determine.
77:24
وَيۡلٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ ٢٤
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
77:25
أَلَمۡ نَجۡعَلِ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ كِفَاتًا ٢٥
Have We not made the earth a container
77:26
أَحۡيَآءٗ وَأَمۡوَٰتٗا ٢٦
Of the living and the dead?
77:27
وَجَعَلۡنَا فِيهَا رَوَٰسِيَ شَٰمِخَٰتٖ وَأَسۡقَيۡنَٰكُم مَّآءٗ فُرَاتٗا ٢٧
And We placed therein lofty, firmly set mountains and have given you to drink sweet water.
77:28
وَيۡلٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ ٢٨
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
77:29
ٱنطَلِقُوٓاْ إِلَىٰ مَا كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ ٢٩
[They will be told], "Proceed to that which you used to deny.
77:30
ٱنطَلِقُوٓاْ إِلَىٰ ظِلّٖ ذِي ثَلَٰثِ شُعَبٖ ٣٠
Proceed to a shadow [of smoke] having three columns
77:31
لَّا ظَلِيلٖ وَلَا يُغۡنِي مِنَ ٱللَّهَبِ ٣١
[But having] no cool shade and availing not against the flame."
77:32
إِنَّهَا تَرۡمِي بِشَرَرٖ كَٱلۡقَصۡرِ ٣٢
Indeed, it throws sparks [as huge] as a fortress,
77:33
كَأَنَّهُۥ جِمَٰلَتٞ صُفۡرٞ ٣٣
As if they were yellowish [black] camels.
77:34
وَيۡلٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ ٣٤
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
77:35
هَٰذَا يَوۡمُ لَا يَنطِقُونَ ٣٥
This is a Day they will not speak,
77:36
وَلَا يُؤۡذَنُ لَهُمۡ فَيَعۡتَذِرُونَ ٣٦
Nor will it be permitted for them to make an excuse.
77:37
وَيۡلٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ ٣٧
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
77:38
هَٰذَا يَوۡمُ ٱلۡفَصۡلِۖ جَمَعۡنَٰكُمۡ وَٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ ٣٨
This is the Day of Judgement; We will have assembled you and the former peoples.
77:39
فَإِن كَانَ لَكُمۡ كَيۡدٞ فَكِيدُونِ ٣٩
So if you have a plan, then plan against Me.
77:40
وَيۡلٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ ٤٠
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
77:41
إِنَّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ فِي ظِلَٰلٖ وَعُيُونٖ ٤١
Indeed, the righteous will be among shades and springs
77:42
وَفَوَٰكِهَ مِمَّا يَشۡتَهُونَ ٤٢
And fruits from whatever they desire,
77:43
كُلُواْ وَٱشۡرَبُواْ هَنِيٓـَٔۢا بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ٤٣
[Being told], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you used to do."
77:44
إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجۡزِي ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ ٤٤
Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
77:45
وَيۡلٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ ٤٥
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
77:46
كُلُواْ وَتَمَتَّعُواْ قَلِيلًا إِنَّكُم مُّجۡرِمُونَ ٤٦
[O disbelievers], eat and enjoy yourselves a little; indeed, you are criminals.
77:47
وَيۡلٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ ٤٧
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
77:48
وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ ٱرۡكَعُواْ لَا يَرۡكَعُونَ ٤٨
And when it is said to them, "Bow [in prayer]," they do not bow.
77:49
وَيۡلٞ يَوۡمَئِذٖ لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ ٤٩
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
77:50
فَبِأَيِّ حَدِيثِۭ بَعۡدَهُۥ يُؤۡمِنُونَ ٥٠
Then in what statement after it [i.e., the Qur’ān] will they believe?
