بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
Al-Infitar 82:18

ثُمَّ مَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا يَوۡمُ ٱلدِّينِ ١٨
Then, what can make you know what is the Day of Recompense?

Commentary on 82:18
وقوله: ( ثُمَّ مَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا يَوْمُ الدِّينِ ) يقول: ثم أيّ شيء أشعرك يوم المجازاة والحساب يا محمد، تعظيما لأمره، ثم فسَّر جلّ ثناؤه بعض شأنه فقال: ( يَوْمَ لا تَمْلِكُ نَفْسٌ لِنَفْسٍ شَيْئًا ) يقول: ذلك اليوم، ( يَوْمَ لا تَمْلِكُ نَفْسٌ ) يقول: يوم لا تُغني نفس عن نفس شيئا، فتدفع عنها بليَّة نـزلت بها، ولا تنفعها بنافعة، وقد كانت في الدنيا تحميها، وتدفع عنها من بغاها سوءا، فبطل ذلك يومئذ، لأن الأمر صار لله الذي لا يغلبه غالب، ولا يقهره قاهر، واضمحلت هنالك الممالك، وذهبت الرياسات، وحصل الملك للملك الجبار، وذلك قوله: ( وَالأمْرُ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِلَّهِ ) يقول: والأمر كله يومئذ، يعني: الدين لله دون سائر خلقه، ليس لأحد من خلقه معه يومئذ أمر ولا نهي.
وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل.
* ذكر من قال ذلك:
حدثنا ابن عبد الأعلى، قال: ثنا ابن ثور، عن معمر، عن قتادة ( وَالأمْرُ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِلَّهِ ) قال: ليس ثم أحد يومئذ يقضي شيئا، ولا يصنع شيئا إلا ربّ العالمين.

82:1
إِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ ٱنفَطَرَتۡ ١
When the sky breaks apart
82:2
وَإِذَا ٱلۡكَوَاكِبُ ٱنتَثَرَتۡ ٢
And when the stars fall, scattering,
82:3
وَإِذَا ٱلۡبِحَارُ فُجِّرَتۡ ٣
And when the seas are erupted
82:4
وَإِذَا ٱلۡقُبُورُ بُعۡثِرَتۡ ٤
And when the [contents of] graves are scattered [i.e., exposed],
82:5
عَلِمَتۡ نَفۡسٞ مَّا قَدَّمَتۡ وَأَخَّرَتۡ ٥
A soul will [then] know what it has put forth and kept back.
82:6
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَا غَرَّكَ بِرَبِّكَ ٱلۡكَرِيمِ ٦
O mankind, what has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Generous,
82:7
ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَكَ فَسَوَّىٰكَ فَعَدَلَكَ ٧
Who created you, proportioned you, and balanced you?
82:8
فِيٓ أَيِّ صُورَةٖ مَّا شَآءَ رَكَّبَكَ ٨
In whatever form He willed has He assembled you.
82:9
كـَلَّا بَلۡ تُكَذِّبُونَ بِٱلدِّينِ ٩
No! But you deny the Recompense.
82:10
وَإِنَّ عَلَيۡكُمۡ لَحَٰفِظِينَ ١٠
And indeed, [appointed] over you are keepers,1

كِرَامٗا كَٰتِبِينَ ١١
Noble and recording;
82:12
يَعۡلَمُونَ مَا تَفۡعَلُونَ ١٢
They know whatever you do.
82:13
إِنَّ ٱلۡأَبۡرَارَ لَفِي نَعِيمٖ ١٣
Indeed, the righteous will be in pleasure,
82:14
وَإِنَّ ٱلۡفُجَّارَ لَفِي جَحِيمٖ ١٤
And indeed, the wicked will be in Hellfire.
82:15
يَصۡلَوۡنَهَا يَوۡمَ ٱلدِّينِ ١٥
They will [enter to] burn therein on the Day of Recompense,
82:16
وَمَا هُمۡ عَنۡهَا بِغَآئِبِينَ ١٦
And never therefrom will they be absent.
82:17
وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا يَوۡمُ ٱلدِّينِ ١٧
And what can make you know what is the Day of Recompense?
82:18
ثُمَّ مَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا يَوۡمُ ٱلدِّينِ ١٨
Then, what can make you know what is the Day of Recompense?
82:19
يَوۡمَ لَا تَمۡلِكُ نَفۡسٞ لِّنَفۡسٖ شَيۡـٔٗاۖ وَٱلۡأَمۡرُ يَوۡمَئِذٖ لِّلَّهِ ١٩
It is the Day when a soul will not possess for another soul [power to do] a thing; and the command, that Day, is [entirely] with Allāh.
83:1
وَيۡلٞ لِّلۡمُطَفِّفِينَ ١
Woe to those who give less [than due],1

- i.e., those who cheat people by giving them less than what they paid for when weighing or measuring - an amount so little as to hardly be noticed. ↩
83:2
ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا ٱكۡتَالُواْ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ يَسۡتَوۡفُونَ ٢
Who, when they take a measure from people, take in full.
83:3
وَإِذَا كَالُوهُمۡ أَو وَّزَنُوهُمۡ يُخۡسِرُونَ ٣
But if they give by measure or by weight to them, they cause loss.
83:4
أَلَا يَظُنُّ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ أَنَّهُم مَّبۡعُوثُونَ ٤
Do they not think that they will be resurrected
83:5
لِيَوۡمٍ عَظِيمٖ ٥
For a tremendous Day -
83:6
يَوۡمَ يَقُومُ ٱلنَّاسُ لِرَبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ ٦
The Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds?
