بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

And has listened [i.e., responded]1 to its Lord and was obligated [to do so]

Commentary on 84:2
﴿وأذِنَتْ لِرَبِّها﴾ أيِ اسْتَمَعَتْ لَهُ تَعالى، يُقالُ: أذِنَ إذا سَمِعَ. قالَ الشّاعِرُ:
صُمٌّ إذا سَمِعُوا خَيْرًا ذُكِرْتُ بِهِ وإنْ ذُكِرْتُ بِشَرٍّ عِنْدَهم أذِنُوا
وقالَ قُعْنُبٌ:
إنْ يَأْذَنُوا رِيبَةً طارُوا بِها فَرَحًا ∗∗∗ وإنْ هُمُ أذِنُوا مِن صالِحٍ دَفَنُوا
والِاسْتِماعُ هُنا مَجازٌ عَنِ الِانْقِيادِ والطّاعَةِ؛ أيِ انْقادَتْ لِتَأْثِيرِ قُدْرَتِهِ عَزَّ وجَلَّ حِينَ تَعَلَّقَتْ إرادَتُهُ سُبْحانَهُ

بِانْشِقاقِها انْقِيادَ المَأْمُورِ المِطْواعِ إذا ورَدَ عَلَيْهِ أمْرُ الآمِرِ المُطاعِ، والتَّعَرُّضُ لِعُنْوانِ الرُّبُوبِيَّةِ مَعَ الإضافَةِ إلَيْها لِلْإشْعارِ بِعِلَّةِ الحُكْمِ، وهَذِهِ الجُمْلَةُ ونَظِيرَتُها بَعْدَ قِيلَ بِمَنزِلَةِ قَوْلِهِ تَعالى: ﴿أتَيْنا طائِعِينَ﴾ في الإنْباءِ عَنْ كَوْنِ ما نُسِبَ إلى السَّماءِ والأرْضِ مِنَ الِانْشِقاقِ والمَدِّ وغَيْرِهِما جارِيًا عَلى مُقْتَضى الحِكْمَةِ عَلى ما قَرَّرُوهُ.
﴿وحُقَّتْ﴾ أيْ: جُعِلَتْ حَقِيقَةً بِالِاسْتِماعِ والِانْقِيادِ لَكِنْ لا بُعْدَ أنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ كَذَلِكَ بَلْ في نَفْسِها وحَدِّ ذاتِها، مِن قَوْلِهِمْ: هو مَحْقُوقٌ بِكَذا، وحَقِيقٌ بِهِ، وحاصِلُ المَعْنى انْقادَتْ لِرَبِّها وهي حَقِيقَةٌ وجَدِيرَةٌ بِالِانْقِيادِ لِما أنَّ القُدْرَةَ الرَّبّانِيَّةَ لا يَتَعاصاها أمْرٌ مِنَ الأُمُورِ لا لِأمْرٍ اخْتَصَّتْ بِهِ مِن بَيْنِ المُمْكِناتِ. وذَكَرَ بَعْضُهم أنَّ أصْلَ الكَلامِ حَقُّ اللَّهِ تَعالى عَلَيْها بِذَلِكَ؛ أيْ: حُكْمِ عَلَيْها بِتَحَتُّمِ الِانْقِيادِ عَلى مَعْنى أرادَهُ سُبْحانَهُ مِنها إرادَةً لا نَقْضَ لَها. وقِيلَ: المَعْنى: وحُقَّ لَها أنْ تَنْشَقَّ لِشِدَّةِ الهَوْلِ، والجُمْلَةُ عَلى ما اخْتارَهُ بَعْضُ الأجِلَّةِ اعْتِراضٌ مُقَرِّرٌ لِما قَبْلَها، وقِيلَ: مَعْطُوفَةٌ عَلَيْهِ ولَيْسَ بِذاكَ.

عَلَى ٱلۡأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ ٣٥
On adorned couches, observing.
83:36
هَلۡ ثُوِّبَ ٱلۡكُفَّارُ مَا كَانُواْ يَفۡعَلُونَ ٣٦
Have the disbelievers [not] been rewarded [this Day] for what they used to do?

بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
84:1
إِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ ٱنشَقَّتۡ ١
When the sky has split [open]
84:2
وَأَذِنَتۡ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتۡ ٢
And has listened [i.e., responded]1 to its Lord and was obligated [to do so]

84:3
وَإِذَا ٱلۡأَرۡضُ مُدَّتۡ ٣
And when the earth has been extended1

84:4
وَأَلۡقَتۡ مَا فِيهَا وَتَخَلَّتۡ ٤
And has cast out that within it1 and relinquished [it]

- Of the dead and all else buried therein. ↩
84:5
وَأَذِنَتۡ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتۡ ٥
And has listened [i.e., responded] to its Lord and was obligated [to do so] –
84:6
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ إِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ كَدۡحٗا فَمُلَٰقِيهِ ٦
O mankind, indeed you are laboring toward your Lord with [great] exertion1 and will meet it.2
84:7
فَأَمَّا مَنۡ أُوتِيَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ بِيَمِينِهِۦ ٧
Then as for he who is given his record in his right hand,
84:8
فَسَوۡفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابٗا يَسِيرٗا ٨
He will be judged with an easy account
84:9
وَيَنقَلِبُ إِلَىٰٓ أَهۡلِهِۦ مَسۡرُورٗا ٩
And return to his people in happiness.
84:10
وَأَمَّا مَنۡ أُوتِيَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ وَرَآءَ ظَهۡرِهِۦ ١٠
But as for he who is given his record behind his back,
84:11
فَسَوۡفَ يَدۡعُواْ ثُبُورٗا ١١
He will cry out for destruction
84:12
وَيَصۡلَىٰ سَعِيرًا ١٢
And [enter to] burn in a Blaze.
84:13
إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فِيٓ أَهۡلِهِۦ مَسۡرُورًا ١٣
Indeed, he had [once] been among his people in happiness;
84:14
إِنَّهُۥ ظَنَّ أَن لَّن يَحُورَ ١٤
Indeed, he had thought he would never return [to Allāh].
84:15
بَلَىٰٓۚ إِنَّ رَبَّهُۥ كَانَ بِهِۦ بَصِيرٗا ١٥
But yes! Indeed, his Lord was ever, of him, Seeing.
84:16
فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِٱلشَّفَقِ ١٦
So I swear by the twilight glow
84:17
وَٱلَّيۡلِ وَمَا وَسَقَ ١٧
And [by] the night and what it envelops
84:18
وَٱلۡقَمَرِ إِذَا ٱتَّسَقَ ١٨
And [by] the moon when it becomes full
84:19
لَتَرۡكَبُنَّ طَبَقًا عَن طَبَقٖ ١٩
[That] you will surely embark upon [i.e., experience] state after state.1

84:20
فَمَا لَهُمۡ لَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ ٢٠
So what is [the matter] with them [that] they do not believe,
84:21
وَإِذَا قُرِئَ عَلَيۡهِمُ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ لَا يَسۡجُدُونَۤ۩ ٢١
And when the Qur’ān is recited to them, they do not prostrate [to Allāh]?
84:22
بَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ يُكَذِّبُونَ ٢٢
But those who have disbelieved deny,
84:23
وَٱللَّهُ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا يُوعُونَ ٢٣
And Allāh is most knowing of what they keep within themselves.
84:24
فَبَشِّرۡهُم بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ ٢٤
So give them tidings of a painful punishment,
84:25
إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ لَهُمۡ أَجۡرٌ غَيۡرُ مَمۡنُونِۭ ٢٥
Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds. For them is a reward uninterrupted.
