ذَٰلِكَ مِنۡ أَنۢبَآءِ ٱلۡغَيۡبِ نُوحِيهِ إِلَيۡكَۚ وَمَا كُنتَ لَدَيۡهِمۡ إِذۡ يُلۡقُونَ أَقۡلَٰمَهُمۡ أَيُّهُمۡ يَكۡفُلُ مَرۡيَمَ وَمَا كُنتَ لَدَيۡهِمۡ إِذۡ يَخۡتَصِمُونَ ٤٤
That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal to you, [O Muḥammad]. And you were not with them when they cast their pens1 as to which of them should be responsible for Mary. Nor were you with them when they disputed.

Commentary on 3:44
قَوْله - تَعَالَى -: ﴿ذَلِك من أنباء الْغَيْب نوحيه إِلَيْك﴾ يَقُول لمُحَمد: ذَلِك من أَخْبَار الْغَيْب نوحيه إِلَيْك ﴿وَمَا كنت لديهم إِذْ يلقون أقلامهم أَيهمْ يكفل مَرْيَم وَمَا كنت لديهم إِذْ يختصمون﴾ فالأقلام: السِّهَام، وَإِنَّمَا سمى قَلما؛ لِأَنَّهُ يقطع ويبرى. وأصل الْقَلَم: الْقطع، وَمِنْه قلم الظفر.
والقصة فِي ذَلِك: أَنهم تشاحنوا واختصموا فِي كَفَالَة مَرْيَم، فَقَالَ زَكَرِيَّا: أَنا أولى بكفالتها مِنْكُم، لِأَن خَالَتهَا عِنْدِي، وَقَالَ أَحْبَارهم - وَقيل أولياؤهم -: نَحن أولى بكفالتها؛ لِأَن أَبَاهَا كَانَ إمامنا وحبرنا، فاقترعوا واستهموا، على أَن من يثبت قلمه فِي المَاء وَصعد، فَهُوَ أولى بكفالتها، فَألْقوا الأقلام على المَاء وعَلى كل قلم اسْم وَاحِد مِنْهُم، فانحدرت أقلامهم تجْرِي فِي المَاء، وَجرى قلم زَكَرِيَّا مصعدا إِلَى أَعلَى المَاء، قيل: غرقت أقلامهم، وارتد قلم زَكَرِيَّا، وَبَقِي فَوق المَاء، وَقيل إِنَّمَا اخْتَصَمُوا فِي كفالتها؛ لِأَنَّهُ كَانَ قد أَصَابَهُم قحط وأزمة، وَكَانَت تضيق بهم النَّفَقَة؛ فاستهموا على كفالتها تدافعا حَتَّى أَن من خرج سَهْمه هُوَ الَّذِي يعولها، وَينْفق عَلَيْهَا، وَالْأول أصح وَأشهر.

3:38
هُنَالِكَ دَعَا زَكَرِيَّا رَبَّهُۥۖ قَالَ رَبِّ هَبۡ لِي مِن لَّدُنكَ ذُرِّيَّةٗ طَيِّبَةًۖ إِنَّكَ سَمِيعُ ٱلدُّعَآءِ ٣٨
At that, Zechariah called upon his Lord, saying, "My Lord, grant me from Yourself a good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication."
3:39
فَنَادَتۡهُ ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ وَهُوَ قَآئِمٞ يُصَلِّي فِي ٱلۡمِحۡرَابِ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُبَشِّرُكَ بِيَحۡيَىٰ مُصَدِّقَۢا بِكَلِمَةٖ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَسَيِّدٗا وَحَصُورٗا وَنَبِيّٗا مِّنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ ٣٩
So the angels called him while he was standing in prayer in the chamber, "Indeed, Allāh gives you good tidings of John, confirming a word1 from Allāh and [who will be] honorable, abstaining [from women], and a prophet from among the righteous."

3:40
قَالَ رَبِّ أَنَّىٰ يَكُونُ لِي غُلَٰمٞ وَقَدۡ بَلَغَنِيَ ٱلۡكِبَرُ وَٱمۡرَأَتِي عَاقِرٞۖ قَالَ كَذَٰلِكَ ٱللَّهُ يَفۡعَلُ مَا يَشَآءُ ٤٠
He said, "My Lord, how will I have a boy when I have reached old age and my wife is barren?" He [the angel] said, "Such is Allāh; He does what He wills."
3:41
قَالَ رَبِّ ٱجۡعَل لِّيٓ ءَايَةٗۖ قَالَ ءَايَتُكَ أَلَّا تُكَلِّمَ ٱلنَّاسَ ثَلَٰثَةَ أَيَّامٍ إِلَّا رَمۡزٗاۗ وَٱذۡكُر رَّبَّكَ كَثِيرٗا وَسَبِّحۡ بِٱلۡعَشِيِّ وَٱلۡإِبۡكَٰرِ ٤١
He said, "My Lord, make for me a sign." He said, "Your sign is that you will not [be able to] speak to the people for three days except by gesture. And remember your Lord much and exalt [Him with praise] in the evening and the morning."
3:42
وَإِذۡ قَالَتِ ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ يَٰمَرۡيَمُ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ ٱصۡطَفَىٰكِ وَطَهَّرَكِ وَٱصۡطَفَىٰكِ عَلَىٰ نِسَآءِ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ ٤٢
And [mention] when the angels said, "O Mary, indeed Allāh has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above the women of the worlds.
3:43
يَٰمَرۡيَمُ ٱقۡنُتِي لِرَبِّكِ وَٱسۡجُدِي وَٱرۡكَعِي مَعَ ٱلرَّٰكِعِينَ ٤٣
O Mary, be devoutly obedient to your Lord and prostrate and bow with those who bow [in prayer]."
3:44

3:45
إِذۡ قَالَتِ ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ يَٰمَرۡيَمُ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُبَشِّرُكِ بِكَلِمَةٖ مِّنۡهُ ٱسۡمُهُ ٱلۡمَسِيحُ عِيسَى ٱبۡنُ مَرۡيَمَ وَجِيهٗا فِي ٱلدُّنۡيَا وَٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ وَمِنَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبِينَ ٤٥
[And mention] when the angels said, "O Mary, indeed Allāh gives you good tidings of a word1 from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary - distinguished in this world and the Hereafter and among those brought near [to Allāh].
