Commentary on 34:51

Commentary

According to most commentators, the attending condition described in verse 51: وَأُخِذُوا مِن مَّكَانٍ قَرِ‌يبٍ (and they will be seized from a place near at hand) refers to the Day of Resurrection (al-hashr) from the terror of which disbelievers and sinners will not be able to escape even if they try to do so. In our normal experience in this world, when a culprit runs away, he has to be searched for. Something like that will not happen in the present case. In fact, all of them will be seized from where they are located. No one will have the chance to escape. Others have taken this time to be that of the agony of death, that is, when the time of death comes, they will be terrified and, unable to extricate themselves from the hands of the angels, they will be seized where they are with their soul taken out.

34:49

Say, "The truth has come, and falsehood can neither begin [anything] nor repeat [it]."1

1 translator’s note
  1. This expression alludes to complete inability, meaning that falsehood was abolished. ↩

34:50

Say, "If I should err, I would only err against myself. But if I am guided, it is by what my Lord reveals to me. Indeed, He is Hearing and near."

34:51

And if you could see1 when they are terrified but there is no escape, and they will be seized from a place nearby.

1 translator’s note
  1. i.e., have a glimpse of the Hereafter. ↩

34:52

And they will [then] say, "We believe in it!" But how for them will be the taking1 [of faith] from a place far away?2

2 translator’s notes
  1. Literally, "taking of something within easy reach," in other words, "How can they expect to obtain faith at this point?"

[1240] i.e., their former life on earth, wherein they had every opportunity but which is now gone, never to return.

    ↩
  2. ↩

34:53

And they had already disbelieved in it before and would assault1 the unseen from a place far away.2

2 translator’s notes
  1. Verbally, by conjecture and denial.

    [1242] i.e., a position far from truth.

    ↩
  2. ↩

34:54

And prevention will be placed between them and what they desire,1 as was done with their kind before. Indeed, they were in disquieting doubt [i.e., denial].

1 translator’s note
  1. Meaning the attainment of faith and its benefits or entrance into Paradise. ↩

Fatir

Originator · Meccan · 45 ayahs

[All] praise is [due] to Allāh, Creator of the heavens and the earth, [who] made the angels messengers having wings, two or three or four. He increases in creation what He wills. Indeed, Allāh is over all things competent.

35:2

Whatever Allāh grants to people of mercy - none can withhold it; and whatever He withholds - none can release it thereafter. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

35:3

O mankind, remember the favor of Allāh upon you. Is there any creator other than Allāh who provides for you from the heaven and earth? There is no deity except Him, so how are you deluded?
