O mankind, remember the favor of Allāh upon you. Is there any creator other than Allāh who provides for you from the heaven and earth? There is no deity except Him, so how are you deluded?

Commentary on 35:3–4

Man is in need of innumerable things to sustain his life, for example, light, water, air, food, minerals, etc. Each of these elements require the combined and concerted actions of universal forces to come into existence. Who else except the one God is capable of bringing about such a big event? When the Creator and Organiser of all these things is the One God, then how could it be reasonable for people to worship any entity other than Him? It is a peculiar historical experience that those who accord a position of greatness to things other than God are intractable when it comes to re-assigning that greatness to God, even though the call for this may be made by a prophet in person. The reason for this is that people find it easy to continue with previously accepted notions; whereas accepting a new prophet would mean putting one’s faith in something different. For the individual to acquire this type of ‘iman’ (faith), he must activate his own thinking powers; he should discover the Truth through his own insight. Undoubtedly, this has always been the most difficult task for a man to perform.

34:49

Say, "The truth has come, and falsehood can neither begin [anything] nor repeat [it]."1

1 translator’s note
  1. This expression alludes to complete inability, meaning that falsehood was abolished. ↩

34:50

Say, "If I should err, I would only err against myself. But if I am guided, it is by what my Lord reveals to me. Indeed, He is Hearing and near."

34:51

And if you could see1 when they are terrified but there is no escape, and they will be seized from a place nearby.

1 translator’s note
  1. i.e., have a glimpse of the Hereafter. ↩

34:52

And they will [then] say, "We believe in it!" But how for them will be the taking1 [of faith] from a place far away?2

2 translator’s notes
  1. Literally, "taking of something within easy reach," in other words, "How can they expect to obtain faith at this point?"

[1240] i.e., their former life on earth, wherein they had every opportunity but which is now gone, never to return.

    ↩
  2. ↩

34:53

And they had already disbelieved in it before and would assault1 the unseen from a place far away.2

2 translator’s notes
  1. Verbally, by conjecture and denial.

    [1242] i.e., a position far from truth.

    ↩
  2. ↩

34:54

And prevention will be placed between them and what they desire,1 as was done with their kind before. Indeed, they were in disquieting doubt [i.e., denial].

1 translator’s note
  1. Meaning the attainment of faith and its benefits or entrance into Paradise. ↩

[All] praise is [due] to Allāh, Creator of the heavens and the earth, [who] made the angels messengers having wings, two or three or four. He increases in creation what He wills. Indeed, Allāh is over all things competent.

35:2

Whatever Allāh grants to people of mercy - none can withhold it; and whatever He withholds - none can release it thereafter. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

35:3

O mankind, remember the favor of Allāh upon you. Is there any creator other than Allāh who provides for you from the heaven and earth? There is no deity except Him, so how are you deluded?
