Commentary on 38:86–39:1
In verse 86, it was said: وَمَا أَنَا مِنَ الْمُتَكَلِّفِينَ (nor am I from among those who make up things artificially.).
The blameworthiness of artificial behavior
The statement means: 'I am not declaring my prophethood artificially, nor am I falsely pretending to have knowledge and wisdom, rather, I am conveying the commandments of Allah to you as they are. From this we learn that feigned formality and pretension is blameworthy in the light of the Shari'ah. Accordingly, there are some ahadith that condemn it. In the Sahihayn (al-Bukhari and Muslim), it has been reported from Sayyidna ` Abdullah Ibn Masud ؓ :
"0 people, whoever from among you knows something, let him tell people about it. But, that which he does not know, let him simply say: (Allah knows best) (because) Allah Ta` a-la has said about his Rasul (Say,"I do not demand from you any fee for it, nor am I from among those who make up things artificially."- 38:86)."
[Allāh] said, "The truth [is My oath], and the truth I say -
38:85
[That] I will surely fill Hell with you and those of them that follow you all together."
38:86
Say, [O Muḥammad], "I do not ask you for it [i.e., the Qur’ān] any payment, and I am not of the pretentious.
38:87
It is but a reminder to the worlds.

And you will surely know [the truth of] its information after a time."

The revelation of the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] is from Allāh, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
39:2
Indeed, We have sent down to you the Book, [O Muḥammad], in truth. So worship Allāh, [being] sincere to Him in religion.
39:3
Unquestionably, for Allāh is the pure religion.1 And those who take protectors besides Him [say], "We only worship them that they may bring us nearer to Allāh in position." Indeed, Allāh will judge between them concerning that over which they differ. Indeed, Allāh does not guide he who is a liar and [confirmed] disbeliever.

- i.e., acceptable to Allāh is that none be associated with Him in worship and obedience. ↩
39:4
If Allāh had intended to take a son, He could have chosen from what He creates whatever He willed. Exalted is He; He is Allāh, the One, the Prevailing.1

39:5
He created the heavens and earth in truth. He wraps the night over the day and wraps the day over the night and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term. Unquestionably, He is the Exalted in Might, the Perpetual Forgiver.1
