And the heaven He raised and imposed the balance

Commentary on 55:7
قوله تعالى: ﴿وَالسَّمَاءَ رَفَعَهَا وَوَضَعَ الْمِيزَانَ﴾ قال مقاتل وغيره: رفعها فوق الأرض مسيرة خمسمائة عام وأمسكها أن تقع على الأرض [[انظر: "تفسير مقاتل" 134 ب.]].
﴿وَوَضَعَ الْمِيزَانَ﴾ تفسير الميزان: الآلة التي يوزن بها، وفي معناه هاهنا قولان، أحدهما: أنه أريد به الميزان الذي نعرفه بيننا.
قال مقاتل: يعني الذي يزن به الناس وضعه عدلًا بينهم لينتصف بعض الناس من بعض، وهو قول الحسن وقتادة والضحاك [[انظر: "تفسير مقاتل" 135 أ، و"جامع البيان" 69/ 27، و"الكشف والبيان" 12/ 34 ب، و"معالم التنزيل" 4/ 267.]]، قالوا: هو الذي يوزن به ليوصل به إلى الإنصاف والانتصاف.
قال أهل المعاني: وهذا تنبيه على النعمة فيه والهداية إليه، ولولا الميزان لتعذر الوصول إلى كثير من الحقوق.
القول الثاني: أن المراد بالميزان العدل، وعبر عنه بالميزان؛ لأنه آلته.
قال عطاء عن ابن عباس: يعني العدل في الأرض بين الناس، وهو قول مجاهد [[انظر: "تفسير مجاهد" 2/ 64، ولم أقف عليه عن ابن عباس.]].
قال أبو إسحق: الميزان هاهنا العدل؛ لأن المعادلة موازنة الأشياء [[انظر: "معاني القرآن" 5/ 96.]]. قال صاحب النظم: على هذا القول: تأويله أمر بالعدل يدل هذا قوله تعالى:

54:50
وَمَآ أَمۡرُنَآ إِلَّا وَٰحِدَةٞ كَلَمۡحِۭ بِٱلۡبَصَرِ ٥٠
And Our command is but one, like a glance of the eye.
54:51
وَلَقَدۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَآ أَشۡيَاعَكُمۡ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرٖ ٥١
And We have already destroyed your kinds,1 so is there any who will remember?

54:52
وَكُلُّ شَيۡءٖ فَعَلُوهُ فِي ٱلزُّبُرِ ٥٢
And everything they did is in written records.
54:53
وَكُلُّ صَغِيرٖ وَكَبِيرٖ مُّسۡتَطَرٌ ٥٣
And every small and great [thing] is inscribed.
54:54
إِنَّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّٰتٖ وَنَهَرٖ ٥٤
Indeed, the righteous will be among gardens and rivers,
54:55
فِي مَقۡعَدِ صِدۡقٍ عِندَ مَلِيكٖ مُّقۡتَدِرِۭ ٥٥
In a seat of honor near a Sovereign, Perfect in Ability.1

بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
55:1
ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنُ ١
The Most Merciful
55:2
عَلَّمَ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ ٢
Taught the Qur’ān,
55:3
خَلَقَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ ٣
Created man,
55:4
عَلَّمَهُ ٱلۡبَيَانَ ٤
[And] taught him eloquence.
55:5
ٱلشَّمۡسُ وَٱلۡقَمَرُ بِحُسۡبَانٖ ٥
The sun and the moon [move] by precise calculation,
55:6
وَٱلنَّجۡمُ وَٱلشَّجَرُ يَسۡجُدَانِ ٦
And the stars and trees prostrate.1

55:7
وَٱلسَّمَآءَ رَفَعَهَا وَوَضَعَ ٱلۡمِيزَانَ ٧
And the heaven He raised and imposed the balance
55:8
أَلَّا تَطۡغَوۡاْ فِي ٱلۡمِيزَانِ ٨
That you not transgress within the balance.
55:9
وَأَقِيمُواْ ٱلۡوَزۡنَ بِٱلۡقِسۡطِ وَلَا تُخۡسِرُواْ ٱلۡمِيزَانَ ٩
And establish weight in justice and do not make deficient the balance.
55:10
وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَضَعَهَا لِلۡأَنَامِ ١٠
And the earth He laid [out] for the creatures.
55:11
فِيهَا فَٰكِهَةٞ وَٱلنَّخۡلُ ذَاتُ ٱلۡأَكۡمَامِ ١١
Therein is fruit and palm trees having sheaths [of dates]
55:12
وَٱلۡحَبُّ ذُو ٱلۡعَصۡفِ وَٱلرَّيۡحَانُ ١٢
And grain having husks and scented plants.
55:13
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ١٣
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?1

خَلَقَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ مِن صَلۡصَٰلٖ كَٱلۡفَخَّارِ ١٤
He created man from clay like [that of] pottery.
55:15
وَخَلَقَ ٱلۡجَآنَّ مِن مَّارِجٖ مِّن نَّارٖ ١٥
And He created the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire.
55:16
فَبِأَيِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ١٦
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?
