Al-A'raf 7:101

تِلۡكَ ٱلۡقُرَىٰ نَقُصُّ عَلَيۡكَ مِنۡ أَنۢبَآئِهَاۚ وَلَقَدۡ جَآءَتۡهُمۡ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلۡبَيِّنَٰتِ فَمَا كَانُواْ لِيُؤۡمِنُواْ بِمَا كَذَّبُواْ مِن قَبۡلُۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يَطۡبَعُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِ ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ ١٠١
Those cities - We relate to you, [O Muḥammad], some of their news. And certainly did their messengers come to them with clear proofs, but they were not to believe in that which they had denied before.1 Thus does Allāh seal over the hearts of the disbelievers.

Commentary on 7:101
لما قص تعالى على نبيه صلى الله عليه وسلم خبر قوم نوح ، وهود ، وصالح ، ولوط ، وشعيب [ عليهم الصلاة والسلام ] وما كان من إهلاكه الكافرين وإنجائه المؤمنين ، وأنه تعالى أعذر إليهم بأن بين لهم الحق بالحجج على ألسنة الرسل ، صلوات الله عليهم أجمعين ، قال تعالى : ( تلك القرى نقص عليك ) أي : يا محمد ( من أنبائها ) أي : من أخبارها ، ( ولقد جاءتهم رسلهم بالبينات ) أي : بالحجج على صدقهم فيما أخبروهم به ، كما قال تعالى : ( وما كنا معذبين حتى نبعث رسولا ) [ الإسراء : 15 ] وقال تعالى : ( ذلك من أنباء القرى نقصه عليك منها قائم وحصيد وما ظلمناهم ولكن ظلموا أنفسهم ) [ هود : 101 ، 102 ]
وقوله تعالى : ( فما كانوا ليؤمنوا بما كذبوا من قبل ) الباء سببية ، أي : فما كانوا ليؤمنوا بما جاءتهم به الرسل بسبب تكذيبهم بالحق أول ما ورد عليهم . حكاه ابن عطية ، رحمه الله ، وهو متجه حسن ، كقوله : ( وما يشعركم أنها إذا جاءت لا يؤمنون ونقلب أفئدتهم وأبصارهم كما لم يؤمنوا به أول مرة ونذرهم في طغيانهم يعمهون ) [ الأنعام : 110 ، 111 ] ; ولهذا قال هنا : ( كذلك يطبع الله على قلوب الكافرين)

7:96
وَلَوۡ أَنَّ أَهۡلَ ٱلۡقُرَىٰٓ ءَامَنُواْ وَٱتَّقَوۡاْ لَفَتَحۡنَا عَلَيۡهِم بَرَكَٰتٖ مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَٰكِن كَذَّبُواْ فَأَخَذۡنَٰهُم بِمَا كَانُواْ يَكۡسِبُونَ ٩٦
And if only the people of the cities had believed and feared Allāh, We would have opened [i.e., bestowed] upon them blessings from the heaven and the earth; but they denied [the messengers], so We seized them for what they were earning.1

7:97
أَفَأَمِنَ أَهۡلُ ٱلۡقُرَىٰٓ أَن يَأۡتِيَهُم بَأۡسُنَا بَيَٰتٗا وَهُمۡ نَآئِمُونَ ٩٧
Then, did the people of the cities feel secure from Our punishment coming to them at night while they were asleep?
7:98
أَوَأَمِنَ أَهۡلُ ٱلۡقُرَىٰٓ أَن يَأۡتِيَهُم بَأۡسُنَا ضُحٗى وَهُمۡ يَلۡعَبُونَ ٩٨
Or did the people of the cities feel secure from Our punishment coming to them in the morning while they were at play?1

7:99
أَفَأَمِنُواْ مَكۡرَ ٱللَّهِۚ فَلَا يَأۡمَنُ مَكۡرَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَّا ٱلۡقَوۡمُ ٱلۡخَٰسِرُونَ ٩٩
Then, did they feel secure from the plan of Allāh? But no one feels secure from the plan of Allāh except the losing people.
7:100
أَوَلَمۡ يَهۡدِ لِلَّذِينَ يَرِثُونَ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ أَهۡلِهَآ أَن لَّوۡ نَشَآءُ أَصَبۡنَٰهُم بِذُنُوبِهِمۡۚ وَنَطۡبَعُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمۡ فَهُمۡ لَا يَسۡمَعُونَ ١٠٠
Has it not become clear to those who inherited the earth after its [previous] people that if We willed, We could afflict them for their sins? But We seal over their hearts so they do not hear.1

7:101

7:102
وَمَا وَجَدۡنَا لِأَكۡثَرِهِم مِّنۡ عَهۡدٖۖ وَإِن وَجَدۡنَآ أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ لَفَٰسِقِينَ ١٠٢
And We did not find for most of them any covenant;1 but indeed, We found most of them defiantly disobedient.

7:103
ثُمَّ بَعَثۡنَا مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِم مُّوسَىٰ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَآ إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَمَلَإِيْهِۦ فَظَلَمُواْ بِهَاۖ فَٱنظُرۡ كَيۡفَ كَانَ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡمُفۡسِدِينَ ١٠٣
Then We sent after them Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment, but they were unjust toward them.1 So see how was the end of the corrupters.

7:104
وَقَالَ مُوسَىٰ يَٰفِرۡعَوۡنُ إِنِّي رَسُولٞ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ ١٠٤
And Moses said, "O Pharaoh, I am a messenger from the Lord of the worlds
