Allah's Most Beautiful Names

Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,

(Verily, Allah has ninety-nine Names, a hundred less one; whoever counts (and preserves) them will enter Paradise. Allah is Witr (One) and loves Al-Witr (the odd-numbered things)) The two Sahihs collected this Hadith. We should state that Allah's Names are not restricted to only ninety-nine. For instance, in his Musnad, Imam Ahmad recorded that `Abdullah bin Mas`ud said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said;

(Any person who is overcome by sadness or grief and supplicates, 'O Allah! I am Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your Hand. Your decision concerning me shall certainly come to pass. Just is Your Judgement about me. I invoke You by every Name that You have and that You called Yourself by, sent down in Your Book, taught to any of Your creatures, or kept with You in the knowledge of the Unseen that is with You. Make the Glorious Qur'an the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the remover of my grief and the dissipater of my concern.' Surely, Allah will remove his grief and sadness and exchange them for delight.) The Prophet was asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Should we learn these words?" He said,

(Yes. It is an obligation on all those who hear this supplication to learn it.) Al-`Awfi said that Ibn `Abbas said about Allah's statement,

(and leave the company of those who belie His Names) "To belie Allah's Names includes saying that Al-Lat (an idol) is derived from Allah's Name." Ibn Jurayj narrated from Mujahid that he commented,

(and leave the company of those who belie His Names) "They derived Al-Lat (an idol's name) from Allah, and Al-`Uzza (another idol) from Al-`Aziz (the All-Mighty)," Qatadah stated that Ilhad refers to associating others with Allah in His Names (such as calling an idol Al-`Uzza). The word Ilhad used in the Ayah in another form means deviation, wickedness, injustice, and straying. The hole in the grave is called Lahd because it is a hole within a hole that is turned towards the Qiblah (the direction of the prayer).

7:179

And We have certainly created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like livestock; rather, they are more astray.1 It is they who are the heedless.

1 translator’s note
  1. The reference is to their inability (i.e., refusal) to think and reason, while blindly following (as they are accustomed). ↩

7:180

And to Allāh belong the best names, so invoke Him by them. And leave [the company of] those who practice deviation concerning His names.1 They will be recompensed for what they have been doing.

1 translator’s note
  1. i.e., use them improperly or deny them. ↩

7:181

And among those We created is a community1 which guides by truth and thereby establishes justice.

1 translator’s note
  1. The followers of Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ). ↩

7:182

But those who deny Our signs - We will progressively lead them [to destruction]1 from where they do not know.

1 translator’s note
  1. Allāh will test them with one favor after another in spite of their disobedience, which only increases them in arrogance and sin. ↩

7:183

And I will give them time. Indeed, My plan is firm.

7:184

Then do they not give thought? There is in their companion [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] no madness. He is not but a clear warner.

7:185

Do they not look into the realm of the heavens and the earth and everything that Allāh has created and [think] that perhaps their appointed time has come near? So in what statement [i.e., message] hereafter will they believe?

7:186

Whoever Allāh sends astray - there is no guide for him. And He leaves them in their transgression, wandering blindly.

7:187

They ask you, [O Muḥammad], about the Hour: when is its arrival?1 Say, "Its knowledge is only with my Lord. None will reveal its time except Him. It lays heavily2 upon the heavens and the earth. It will not come upon you except unexpectedly." They ask you as if you are familiar with it. Say, "Its knowledge is only with Allāh, but most of the people do not know."
